Sorry to hear that STI

Hope he/she is ok and recovers quickly

No offence meant by my post, would have thought moles would have kept away, but you learn something every day.

Along with our Rottie, we have 2 female chinchillas. Wouldn't let them out all together but when the dog goes too near the cages she gets a real hard time

Anyway, back to the problem in hand:

What to do is dig a narrow trench around the run (right beside it) about a 2 feet deep and sink some chicken wire into the hole. This way, anything digging down will have to go very deep to get in and will probably give up.

Alternatively, if you cannot dig down, line the floor of the run and hutch area with chicken wire, attached securely to the sides with no gaps so nothing can get in. Only problem with this is that you will have to then cover the wire on the run floor so the 'pigs don't get caught in it if they spook.

Hope this helps

D

We have used one of those sonic mole repellent things and it did not work for us at all! The little buggers still made a mess of the garden and one even had the cheek to pop up right under the repellent thingy

A good old fashioned mole trap is the only way to get rid of them, bit cruel but it works. We once fired a shotgun down the hole - that worked too but was a bit messy

With a mole trap you have to study the mole hills and with a cane gently push it into the ground where you think the 'run' might be, when you find one set the trap in it - guaranteed quick death to Mr Mole

I heard that the best way to deal with moles is to give their details to the CIA or MI5 and let them deal with it.

Or

Smack them over the head with a spade

I do sympathise with you mate but you have to make light of these things.

Why would you want such a whimpy pet anyway ?? Come on anything that get scared to death because it get's attacked by a mole has to be the whimpiest creature on the planet.

Apparently in Guatamala or Peru, Chile or somewhere South American you can buy deep fried Guinee pigs on a stick.......maybe that's what the mole has heard too and he fancies a bit of a Deep Fried Pig culenary experience

Just a thought

Mike

P.S I know of somwone who will be able to BBQ it for you

Guinee pigs a bigger than Moles so in my book that makes them whimps

And I'm sure I would be scared sh1tless if I were to be attacked by some crazed Weasel eating Horse with razor sharp teeth but not because the horse might kill me but because I must be going.......

OUT OF MY F*****G mind

I'm sorry tho mate my attempt to cheer you up was obviously ill conceived so I'll try not mention Guinee Pig on a stick or BBQ again but I have been told that if done correctly they taste just like SUPER BBQ CHICKEN

My introduction to motality was via a Hamster called frisky but the little F*cker shouldnt of bit me, really he shouldnt

Serial killers start out by being cruel to small animals. How many people are under your floorboards?

No I am trying to be a pr1ck......unlike somepeople who are just natural at it

And if was going up against a fight trained pitbull I'd pull it's front legs apart and kill or I'd have a gun and shoot it or I'd have a bat and batter it or I'd run over it in my car or something else but whats has that got to do with Guinee pigs being whimps ??

And who mentioned anything about being cruel to animals ?? not me. It is a fact that in some South American countries they eat Guinee Pigs on a stick just like Chicken Satay.

Mike

Can you get deep fried Pitbulls on sticks ??

in my garden i have two guinea pigs (turbo and dumpvalve ), anyway they live outside and are quite happy in their run.

however, the last couple of nights something has tried to get at them- i know this cause there are scratches on the outside of the run and also the pigs are very nervous in the mornings and wont take food from my hand- which they used to.

i have pointed the pir from the outside lights at the hutch to light the area up if anything comes near them at night but i wonder if this will deter whatever it is.

does anyone know if things like pepper for cats or those sonic repelents for moles and stuff work? id rather use something that wont hurt the offending creature. (and i dont want the pigs inside cause they get used to the heat then when they go back outside they get colds)

any tips?

Could be a fox or a cat. Unlikely to be a dog.

You could try some of the deterrant stuff you can get from petshops and the like. Light may work if the PIR picks up the movement.

Do you have a garage or porch they could live in at night? Or a cold room?

Failing that I'd reinforce the run substantailly. You wouldn't want them to be eaten

Got the same problem with my rabbits..

ours is a fox though as we have seen it, during day light walk up the garden... was not overly scared when my wife ran at it shouting... she thought one scare and it would not return.. it just looked at her and then after a couple of seconds where my wife was then thinking "What do I do now" it turned and walked off...

Nice idea with the light sensor though... might try that..

hmmmm, i reckon it could be a cat. i never seen any sign of foxes but you never know.

the only other thing is that there are loads of mole hills in the field beyond the house. some even turned up in our neighbours garden but he used a smoke canister in the hole to get id of them. although there are no mole hills in the garden could they be coming in at night and trying to get at the pigs for their food?? i assume moles and guinea pigs have similar diets so would they be attracted to the pigs dried food?

STi

ps- im gonna up the dfences on the run this weekend just in case something is determind!

You got squirrels around you? Reason I ask is that they've been known to go into rabbit hutches & take bedding/straw etc for their dens. I'd put a padlock on as they can be quite clever and will work out the mechanism of the door catch...

I've put padlocks on our rabbit hutch just in case - squirrels probably can't undo padlocks, and I was also worried that if a fox or something tried to get into the hutch, it would only have to knock the catch and the door would be open.

Other possibility could be a rat?

The pigs are looking worried!!!!!!!!!

We do not want to know your extra curricular activities

Leave the pigs alone you pervert

Only kiddin.

We have got a shed for the animals to go into at night. We have two rabbits, one is a 16 week old French lop and he is massive, 6 Chinchillas, two rats in the house, two dogs in the house and a horse in my mates field. The rabbits are in a galvanised metal run during the day so nobodu can get to them.

Hope your wee fellas are OK

Could be a Badger. They take chickens, so I doubt they would have a problem with 'iccle pigs.

thanks for the sensible answers (no thanks to the others

perhaps those who think its funny will laugh at this, this morning the smallest pig (a black and white shorthaired) is at the vet after being scratched badly, funny? i dont think so.

and the vet also seems pretty sure what did it- the mole hills are now all around the back the fence just inches outside the garden- Mr Carn (vet) says its not uncommon for the moles to go into runs in search of slugs at night (their food) if they encounter another animal they can be quite nasty and it seems this is what has hurt turbo. it would certainly explain the tiny gap that has been scratched under the side of the run.

again, thanks for the sensible help.

moles have powerful claws for digging - and botrh pigs and moles being short sighted they are bound sure to bump into each other - that's probably how the porker got pranged.

you can buy humane mole traps - but i wouldn't recommend them - moles always try to return to their original holes.

I was in my local Garden Centre a couple of weeks ago, and in the pond/water feature side was a battery powered pir activated sprinkler on a spike. It just plugs into a garden hose and sprays anything which cuts across its path. I can't remember exactly how much it was but it wasn't excessive (maybe £40 ish). Try this link

Dave T-S has some good anti-mole experience.

Seemed to involve rubber hose pipes but then I may have been confusing that with another BBS I was on....
