On my way back from Manchester last night at 9:30pm, travelling on the Edenfield bypass behind a couple of cars (Steve_F et al will know this area best ) with the missus in tow. Doing about 75 and 2 lads in a TT come flying up behind me smiling. "This should be fun" I thought as people always underestimate my motor
Reached the end of the dual cway in left lane with TT behind, then moved to right lane to go straight on at roundabout. TT follows me.
From this roundabout it kinks right, then left into a dip, then up a 1 mile long hill - similar dip to Dear Leap at Oulton. It is well known by us locals as a good hill to test performance cars, and a good comparison point for vehicles.
Anyway, gets on to roundabout in 2nd gear, TT closes up. Kinks right, chucks it left then I bury the throttle to start on the uphill slog. I go in left lane, TT goes in right lane with no cars ahead. 2nd gear, hit 7200rpm, change to third. TT still behind by about 2 car lengths, desparately trying to get past but cant.
Approaching top of hill in third, MR2 hits its Vtec like 4000rpm zone and picks up vastly, straight up into 4th gear at xxxmph. TT is now behind by 5-7 car lengths.
We then settled down to a more sedate pace in convoy, and after a while he was turning left, so gave me a flash and wave (in a "fair do's, you beat me" kind of way) and we went on our way - have to say I am taking that as a victory And I thought they were supposed to be quick - must have been the 180bhp model. Still considering I drive a standard MY94 MR2 with 98k miles and 174bhp I am chuffed to bits.
I still maintain that the MR2 is a vastly underrated car compared with others in the field

I had an MR2 before baby "forced" me to buy a scooby turbo.
Got to agree great car, so driver friendly. I would not like for you to do the same "race" in damp conditions though!
My mate has a MR2 Turbo pushing out 330bhp (Rolling roaded) and he won't put it through it's paces against my standard 5 door Scooby.
Don't you find people don't want to challange you though, several times I've pulled alongside quick cars at lights, they look at that scoop and think "No"

I must have been unlucky then because I couldn't shake one at 250kmh on the autobahn in my standardish MY00, he couldn't get past me though and I could accelerate faster than he could.

....then up a 1 mile long hill ......Approaching top of hill in third, MR2 hits its Vtec like 4000rpm zone .......
Dream,
so, it takes over a mile (you were in second on the roundabout, remember) for an MR2 to get to 4000rpm in third...........???
Not knocking the MR2 over my TT, as I would have bought one if they could have supplied the 'tiptronic' one at the time, but something doesn't add up.............

Need to elaborate on the hill - it is a steep hill, which then levels off slightly then after a mile starts going flat, then back down hill. You generally count the top of the hill where the Parking sign is (Dales will know the one ) as this is when the hill starts to become not as steep - if you understand me - the distance to where I changed into 4th is probably realistically about 200-300 yds from the roundabout, but the whole hill is about a mile long, so when I say "top of the hill" I mean the top of the first steep bit - confusing I know, but it is difficult to set the scene of said hill.
The "mile" bit includes the flat part at the top, and is only an estimate anyways as I am **** at gauging distance.
It was a full out flat acceeleration moment though, and I even managed to slightly hit the rev limiter between gears 2 and 3 Not good as it saps too much power.
Considering it was probably the 180bhp version, and my car has 174bhp and a more run-in engine and is lighter it does add up

drove a 180 bhp titty hire car in germany recently
it wasnt gutless but it wasn't too inspiring.
Felt V safe and solid though .
Didn't feel anywhere near as quick as my 99 turbo so a well sorted mr2 sholud easily as good if not better.

Ha ha, reminds me of my old car .. a 1997 GT-T Bar in a nice purpley-blue colour (Azure Blue??). Met the missus buying this one
Used to get frustrated at lack of poke until about 4K then whizz of we went
One thing though, redline in 2nd then into 3rd and you have to wait until you hit 4K VTEC like zone and then off. If I remember rightly changing at the redline in 2nd won't drop you anywhere near under 4K in 3rd ?????
Unless the gearing was changed between models, 3rd in my car redline would be approx 100 bananas, 2 = 70 bananas ???
Still nice to rememeber one of my old un's
Doofus.

Jesus!
If I had a penny for the number of times people slag off TT's, comparing them to other cars!
I am lucky enough to own a 180 TT and a Scoob and they are totally different. I do agree with DW about the fact his MR2 should be quicker. I would expect it to be. My TT is NOT WRX quick, but I would say that it is ever so smooth and my preferred car for long journeys and day to day driving.
The TT is without a doubt one of the nicest cars to sit in - awesome design, build quality and comfort. I love it. Also quite a few TT owners up here in Hull flash and wave and are generally really friendly!

so Mossman - I take it the answer is you need to own both cars then, the scoob for performance/handling & a TT for posability ??
only joking....go easy now

Doofus - I have got the gearchange down to a fine art now. Redlining in 2nd I can change to third quick enough to land it bang on 4,000rpm and it picks up straight away and flies again up to 7krpm. It is tough though, and a few times I have missed 3rd, which is annoying
Moss, dont get me wrong I love the TT's - very stylish - mate of mine has a Cabriolet version (went from a Scoob Type RA). I was just surprised he beat me as i originally thought they were all 225bhp
Great fun though
