Default Any EV mechanics here?

As title.

A rare breed as only 4% of mechanics are qualified to work in EV and HV vehicle electrics ( https://www.carthrottle.com/post/onl...o-work-on-evs/ ).

Looks like I'm being press-ganged into doing the Level 4 EV vehicle repair. And wondering what I'm being setup for.

Level 3 was basically 5 days to learn how to pull the isolator plug in order to remove/replace components. Got a feeling there's little use for anything more advanced, I doubt I'd ever be stripping down a air con compressor or inverter as typically the only repair option is via replacement and internal components are unavailable or not cost effective to repair; Like an alternator...easy to rebuild, but difficult to obtain the parts to rebuild as labour-wise (as well as warranty liability) its more cost effective to replace rather than repair.

The way things are going, this would have to be a useful extra string to your bow, surely?

Yes, I also was made to learn calculus. But had no passion for it; Just a tick box component in order to get where I wanted to go as a naive student with grand aspirations (Which didn't go to plan anyway - such is life).

This to me is a tick box component to keep the insurance man happy should I frazzle myself with 1.21gigawatts. So yeah I'm more employable on that merit, but will I be able do anything more? Maybe. Just I have the distinct feeling that this is yet another half-assed bulls**t course.

The online components have already triggered me, as they quoted theory equations relating to phase angles..but it's blatantly copy and pasted straight from an engineering mathematics text book (which i'm sure I have in atttic somewhere) BUT, they forgot to past in the variable definitions making it totally pointless. And the fact a mechanic doesn't need to know it anyway; We're not designing inverter/drive circuits!

On the bright side; At least I didn't have to do the first aider course

Day1

Health and safety.

What do you do if a li-ion battery catches fire whilst fitted to a vehicle. Do you:

a) Cover it with a giant fire blanket
b) Plop it into a giant skip full of water
c) Call the fire brigade and then f**k off to the pub whilst they deal with it.

Yeah, but I'd probably skip straight to C.

Did learn something new: Being electrocuted can cause rhabdomyolysis which can wreck your kidneys. So you may survive a shock and seem ok but if untreated you'll die a few weeks later from renal failure

Noice!

The health and safety can be good if relevant. Just remember common sense, isn't common. First aid is good to have my place doesn't offer it to everyone.

Well things may get interesting on Friday as there's going to be a visit by a politician. No idea who, or even if it's a front bencher or BoJo himself. If there's any press about I'll try my best to photobomb everything
