if its only short trips and you dont want to go electric go for something like a little mazda 2 petrol. my mrs had one for years with 0 issues in her ownership.
stay away from diesels if doing short trips.

My other half had an A3 as a runaround for years and loved it but it was getting a bit long in the tooth so swapped it in for a Seat Leon, i can't fault the Leon to be fair, it's a VW in disguise really, reliable, comfortable and fairly spacious inside.

Cambelt that runs in oil...supposed to last 110k/10yrs...but starts to break up at 5yr/40k and block the oil pickup with rubber debris. Although the reason why you find out the belt is about to fail is because you are stripping it down to fix the blown head gasket!

Then we have the good ol MA derived gearbox that STILL wrecks its first motion shaft bearing, and if left pops the ***** out the race which then get ground up in the gears, during this it breaks the nose off the front oil seal so it wrecks the clutch too. £20 part that wrecks the gears and clutch

Stick with the Fiesta, although 1.0 ecoboost have zero tolerance to coolant loss and have no gauge or level sensor

Yeah I just threw that in the edit...oh and the ‘automatic’ (automated manual) spitting its dummy out and giving you no gears in the most awkward of places (usually clutch on its way out).

Brake discs in general are problem nowadays

Just checked my Nissan Leaf discs, virtually no wear in 40,000 miles.

Big deal any leccy car can do that...my R32 is on 52k on original front pads and discs....going for ‘ol Pete’s record.

The 535d Gt is now on 95k and all its had is pair of front pads...front and rear discs are original as are rear pads....impressive for a 2000kg automatic.
