More pertinent is why was the UK firm charging £50million more?
For that much difference I'd be asking questions. The boss of the UK firm that lost out was quick to spout his disgruntlement...was he expecting to be able charge uncompetitive fees on the assumption that a UK passport must be made in the UK? If so, that's against EU rules... Which he may have not realised...we haven't left yet so are still bound by them.
Still, let the huff and puff media spin this which ever way they want it.

this story just exposes the bull**** of Brexit on so many levels it literally defies the ability of Brexitidots capability to understand it
and remember folks - France insist its passports (citing perfectly valid National Security reasons) are printed in France by a French company
so it can't be the EU!!!!!
how to confuse a Brexidiot - stand him in front of 5 shovels and ask him to take his pick

The boss of De la Rue that is spitting feathers at this decision is a remain voter, and it was he who went public on this matter; Yet who was to say that if the UK had voted to remain Del La Rue would have continued to be the manufacturer?
As an aside, going by ours that have been issued from the past two years, the quality is sub-par anyway (badly laminated photo page). Maybe that was the reason to change? (Doubtful, but sweet revenge for them making me look like a tit at automated boarder controls ).

Wasn’t this what ‘we’ voted for?
Welcome to the future of international competition.
And who needs a blue passport anyway? I’m more than happy with my current burgundy passport. I get to fastpath through the EU channels when I travel around Europe.
When will the UK come to it’s senses and end this Brexit stupidity?
Nothing about Brexit benefits Britain.

So, you are saying we should spend the extra £100million to have them made in the UK, because that's what the French would do?

The arch free traders like Fox, IDS, Gove and Rees Morgue et al (backed by Minford and the loony Economist for Brexit cult) complaining of free market economics
You genuinely could not make it up - still Gateshead voted for it so Schadenfreude and all that

Indeed, they seem to regularly suffer with profit warnings stemming back to the 1990's. Highly likely the company has been on unsound foundations for well over a decade...yet continue to operate and enjoy lavish government contracts.
Maybe the £100million difference combined with accusations of the government being too pally with the likes of Carillion have seen the powers that be take a second look at offering contracts to companies in poor financial health?
