Default Wireless Sky?

Can I get a Wireless Sky Box?

Main internet input with router is at front of house and TV etc us at back. I need Sky connected to Internet to access films. A long cable through the house is not very practical.

Yes you can, you can also get an adaptor if your existing box doesn't have WiFi built in

Cheers

So I guess an adaptor would be cheaper than a new wireless box? David

Avoid Sky Q - nothing but bad press regarding WiFi.

David - what sky box have you got now?
Why not just ring sky and ask for a box upgrade

Alternatively run a phone cable from the socket to beside the sky box, then you can plug it into your router with a short cable.

I'd annoy sky first though, if you're not the pushy kind on bartering, phone cable would be the cheapest I'd say

OK thanks - here's the background. I moved house a few weeks back and the removal company seemed to hide my old Sky box somewhere in the 500 unpacked boxes in my garage. So I phoned Sky and asked for a replacement box. That's when they first started lying to me The woman said they no longer supplied Sky boxes and said I should use their new Q facility at the bargain price of "just" £12.95 per month. I asked for Murdoch's direct line but my request was declined I phoned the next day and spoke to someone else who said that since I had been with Sky for 17 years they would send a new box FOC - I explained that I had lost my own box. A few days later Parcelfarce turned up with the box but refused to leave it with me unless I handed over my old box. I said I had explained the situation with Sky but he still refused to hand the box over.
By this time I was getting pretty p,issed off and yet another call to Sky elicited many apologies and the promise of another box. Several more days and another box turned up but again they refused to leave it without my old unit.
In the meantime BT installed a fibre router near the front door but the TV is at the back of the house and the wall connection doesn't seem to function. Running a cable would be a pain as many doors etc in the route.
A Sky engineer is rushing here on 26 Jan but I learnt that he wasn't bringing a box or at best a reconditioned one so I cancelled this and they have now promised to change the plan so I get a new box.
In the meantime a local TV guy took pity on me and loaned me a Sky HD boxwhich means I can watch TV but not access the film bundle which I bought mainly so my kids could watch some films when they visited over Christmas.
Hence my OP. I guess I will phone Sky again and try to get them to bring a WiFi box.

Any other suggestions welcome

Sky only supply the old Sky+ HDW system to customers who are unable to take advantage of Sky Q, they no longer manufacture the older equipment as they are moving with technology and into a new era.

Customers whom have a communal dish system will fall under this category.

I will be surprised if you get a brand new unit and not refurbish due to the above.

The quote of yours is brilliant " asked for Murdoch's direct line"

Murdoch is a share holder in Sky like many others did you expect him to be sat at a desk in Sky pushing paperwork... waiting on your call.

Good Luck keep us posted.

edit : to make your existing Sky box work with WIFI if it is not a WIFI enabled box you need a Sky on demand connector like this one

We went for something like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nk...p=142227606337

We paid £23 delivered so not far off the price of a connector that plugs into your box(if you can find it) and if you can be bothered to have a walk around a carboot sale then you'd probably bag one for a tenner

Is it just a wifi signal you need to your sky box? If so then a wireless Ethernet bridge could do?

Bridge - far too much hassle.
A box off eBay like the one above is a great idea

I once emailed Jeremy Darroch detailing my disgust on a particular situation where I wanted to purchase a replacement HD box - at the new customer price.
I had a phone call from his secretary resolving the matter within 30 minutes of my sent email

Off the Sky topic but on the 'wireless' topic:

My lad brought his wireless Amazon fire stick to demo to me how good it is. I was impressed.

No bother. I was surprised at the outcome of call to be honest.
I wanted to buy a replacement box (old one kept hanging etc) but Sky wanted to charge me full price, I thought I should be allowed new customer price given I've been with Sky for nearly 20years. Offer from secretary was if I paid £20 postage they're send me a new box - result

Not sure where you've read that but I have Sky Q with additional boxes throughout the house. It's brilliant. My place has bloody great big thick stone walls and we have no wifi issues at all.

Thanks for asking. Yes ebay box arrived well packaged in an acre of bubble wrap. Even had old Sky card in.

Slotted my new card in, stuck wires in as before and f.. me it worked.

Just wondering if it is possible to watch Sky through my wifi laptop. This has decent resolution and 17" screen and would save straining my eyes trying to read the Sky menu on the far side of the room. Laptop also has nice pair of Bose speakers connected - fantastic sound.

All your help much appreciated

It's everywhere, Daz. My Q was pòo over WiFi, granted it got better the more boosters I fitted but who wants white boxes plugged in everywhere?

Also, Sky themselves recognise it hence will apparently soon be offering to fit switches with a hard-wired system which is exactly what I have with zero issues. That however is not how Sky Q was marketed as the straight forward plug and play system.

Sky Q was never ready to come to market for a fair number of customers. Still, they are now almost paying my entire Sky package for the next 12 months with 2 free mini boxes thrown in too.

You can watch sky via PC,Apple, android etc using the skygo app.
Also if you have an iPhone or android then you can control your skybox and view the menu using the sky+ app,you can even set programs to record if your out of the house.

You're one of the lucky ones, it's such an issue it was featured on Watchdog recently. It's not just wifi issues either, lots of users complaining about software bugs and the boxes continuously locking up and/or taking way too long to reboot etc.

Indeed, it got a right roasting on Watchdog.

@David - yeah, as mentioned go register for Skygo. That'll let you watch Sky on your laptop
