Floods in Cumbria

It's terrible to see such devastation especially at this time of year. I just wonder what questions will be asked regarding the new expensive flood defences.

I hope they all recoup there losses and fast it's time our country to look after our own but will they? And I hope they all had insurance as it will take some strain off things

yeah, potentially a lot of uninsurable properties
and no insurance = (in most circumstances) no mortgage
so almost unsellable
a couple of 1 in a hundred year events in a 4 or 5 year period, they may have to re-define the odds

Nature doesn't spare anyone, and we never know when Britain could be at the receiving end.
Let's see how many of us from within us will put hand in our pocket to help the ones out who can't even claim their damages on insurance. Most of them may just keep their each hand in a pocket each (of their trousers) and watch the disastrous drama from their safe homes.
Anyway, where is our resident dentist Dr. Midlife Crisis? He's from Cumbria, isn't he? Hope he's ok.

That's not the problem, it's the fact these things are designed for a "once in X years" event. Obviously is a cost/benefit (not just financial cost) analysis that has to place and you end up with a compromise.

and you then get 3 "once in a 100 year events" in the space of 10 years
your risk/benefit calculations may need adjusting
I am sure the Insurance statisticians are taking an interest in this

whats needed is to stop building on natural flood planes and fcucking about with the water table..........
also build roads, etc. that actually have drains that work - local'ish m/way upgrade has started flooding to the point of closure where there have never been past issues???
progress, apparently..........

The floods are just a few miles from me and I have to battle into a totally gridlocked Carlisle every day
Never mind as I stand to make a fortune as 2of my furnitre competitors are flooded out at a peak trading time
Worse then last time
2600 houses flooded in Carlisle and 6500 in Cumbria
Basically we are fcuked
I was flooded at my workplace 11 years ago with a million quid insurance payout
Was closed for 12 weeks then took very little money for 4 months then it piled in 8 months later amd took thousands more off flood victims as a furniture retailer
They spent 40 million om defences and it didn't work
We had Cameron the clown up on Monday talking to a posh immaculately dressed makeup wearing "flood victim" who was a Tory voting upper class lady
Total spin instead of meeting the real working class people
Cameron talked a good talk them left quickly befor he was lynched
Secratary of state for the environment was next with the normal spin interviews which made her out to be an idiot she said #
The defences worked #
What planet was she on everyone was flooded
The defences gave more time to react #
Yes an hour maybe people still were flooded
Not as much water got in #
Stupid idiot 2 ft of water does as much damage as 4ft
We must have more meeting #
Yes another waste of time
We will continue spending #
They have cut 116 million of the flood budget
solutions
Rivers need dredging but it's expensive
Stop building on flood plains
Higher walls
Create flood tempory lakes
The main one is sack all the enviroment agency bosses as they have failed to get the job done
and replace them with Dutch professionals who have kept Holland dry for years
We give 55 million to EU every day and get half back so we could afford better defences for the whole country
We spend 12 billion on stupid overseas policies
It's about time we protected our own country as we can't stop climate change making the weather Getting worse
Total cost estimate at 400-500 million quid for Cumbria
Midlife would of been flooded of he hadn't moved house To higher up
I haven't seen him for a couple of years
His old house in the village is under water despite spending 4 million quid
The water went round the defences in a different way
The person who designed it should be fired and tied up in the village pub which is under 12ft of water amd let the locals deal with him
Cumbrians aren't very pleased with Cameron at the moment

I saw on the News last night that boxer Amir Khan was donating Christmas gifts and food to the flood victims. That's quite good of him, I thought. I also heard that with the water now turning into snow, there will be continued hardships to face.
