IMO Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler live never come close to the recordings, and this is a typical example. Great group on album, not so good live.

I rather doubt if he could get a better tone from that wonderful Les Paul wherever he was playing

No, absolutely no argument about that, he's right up there with the best. His recordings feature him just about talk/singing throughout, and that technique works brilliantly, especially on moody pieces like Brothers in Arms. But live he always spoils the vocal input by mumbling instead of singing, the guitar riffs are different and for the most part this plays nothing like the recordings.

My favourite bands always reproduce their recorded sound very accurately, after all this is why we buy/download/steal their music in the first place. I'm thinking Pink Floyd, ELO, Eagles, etc etc. I did two Dire Straits concerts, and for the above reasons I was disappointed by both.

Give Alchemy a listen Paben, IMO every track on it is the definitive version

No question, but as it's live it is the definitive version. But in most of his stage versions (not all) Knopfler seems to forget, or chooses to ignore, that the voice is an important instrument too.

I agree with you on this.

My experience and knowledge of Dire Straits is pretty dire, I know nothing about them, I don't know if I've heard many songs by them, and I didn't even know who Knopfler was. I just thought it was a good tune, and I vaguely remember it because a few years ago it was re-sung in connections with the PTSD effected war veterans, I think.

In my opinion, most artists sound better in their properly choreographed recordings. Not everyone is Paloma Faith and Adele. Rest of the idiots just mime on their recordings e.g. stupid Cheryl Fearn-Cotton Vissacheenee. That's why I don't bother with gigs. I can't be bothered being pushed about to hear people live, anyway. That's just madness unless you buy VIP tickets, which I would have only done to see Jacko Whacko the Great.

With that I would agree, but remember Knopfler is first and foremost a guitarist.

I do wish he'd do more collaborations with singers. I really liked the stuff he did with James Taylor, who by the way sounds far better live than he does on record

A guitarist he most certainly is but all his famous Dire Straits tracks feature his voice, from 'Sultans' onwards. Of course he is right up there with the greatest guitar soloists of all time, I just wish his singing kept up with his guitar work when he's live!

His later work is very fine, no doubt about that.
