Default Government in manifesto u-turn shocker

During the election Osborne banged on and on about a northern powerhouse and rebalancing the economy and part of this was an upgrade to northern city links via rail.

Now less than two months since they were elected we learn that the upgrade works to the Leeds-Manchester route and the Midlands mainline route to Sheffield and Derby are scrapped. One upgrade survived the cull though..... ah yes its the one from London to the south west... the key words being London and south!

Am I surprised? Nope!!!!

To be frank electrification of existing lines is a bit moot , when whats really needed is totally new infrastructure.

Like converting three lane motorways into 4 lanes...its just a sticky plaster. Whats needed is more lines, like we need more motorways.

None of which covers up the fact that once again the government have lied their way through an election campaign. Knowing that Scotland is now no longer a Labour stronghold they can afford to cut the north of England loose and still retain power at the next election. Meanwhile their precious south continues to prosper!

More so than us northeners, I suspect?

I agree that the decision to mothball the works stinks, but I forecast it BEFORE the election, when they were talking of the "Northern powerhouse". I said then it was all bollox and we'd see nowt. HS2 will be next, you watch.

Liars, all of them..
BTW: notice, it's Network Rail's fault, NOT the government?

To be fair Jeff you did indeed say that! I would question your use of the word mothball... it's cancellation in reality. Politician speak!

Different government same old story:

Much like the bypasses that were going to be built by where I live.

All mothballed when Blair came into power.

The land has since been sold for rack-'n-stack housing....meanwhile the old existing roads get gridlocked from ever increasing traffic that would have benefited had those new road been built.

Its just more and more of the same old story, short term gain for a huge cost long-term.

Aye. Why ARE our governments unable to see the long-term? Or not interested?

Is it because they will be gone in five years?
