Putin was a KGB big noise all through the previous Cold War. The West is pretty impotent when it comes to it's fighting power, will only use sanctions and he knows it. Russia can now go it alone on many things and could cripple the Western Europe by putting the stops on gas and oil exports if it wanted too.
Long gone are the days when people had a back bone and would stand up for their nation no matter what was asked of them. The moral and morale fibre of this once great nations is now sadly lacking.
The old saying of "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country" is lost on many.
BUT the West is also taking an increasing expansionist role into the Middle East and Eastern Europe to counter the Chinese threat but with a slightly less overt presence.
Have a look at what the Chinese are doing in Africa, their increasing arsenal of military equipment and then start to become afraid. If the Chinese push into unstable Myanmar to the Bay of Bengal and they have access to a massive oil field and mineral wealth outside their own borders.
