Pirate Radio?

generally its the usual decks, mixer, amp, speakers like you get at any studio/bedroom DJ set up but after that its all very different. The transmitter and aerial needs to be (obiviously) high up and a tower block is the usual chioce. The aerial is not too difficult to come by but the transmitter costs around 500squid for a decent one. around 200 watts will cover an area covering most of London and some of the home counties, depending on the terrain. The RIS (radio investigation service) can of course triangulate the position of the transmitter so it makes sense to keep it away from the studio. This is done by the use of multiple microwave tranceivers which bounce the signal back and fourth across London, reducing the chance of the studio getting raided.
How they are funded is a little shady. The legal way is to ask for donations from the Djs in return for sets on the air and of course to put on events of the music you are playing to support the station. The other method is when the whole station is a front for organised crime in that its a money laundering scam.

Dunk, I don't think it's for sale! It's going free to a good mate of President Tone Allegedly! in return for substantial party funding

Personally I LOVE pirate stations. Better tunes than legal stations, Better DJs and MCs (a friend used to mc on a station in Wandsworth). Started with Don gone through Dream, Flex, Upfront, Sounds and recently Passion and Flight. Kiss used to be a pirate but lost the plot when they got bought by EMAP (who own Max Power and Capital amongst others) so hardly listen to them now.

Dont forget Redeye mate! And Dream, how can you forget dream!!!!
Got me into the hardcore sound that I'm into to this day. I actually met Boots Hi-Fi at a rave a while back.
I've still got over 100 tapes of Dream and an MA2 in the wardrobe with DREAM FM 107.6fm THE HAPPIER SOUNDS OF LONDON.
Best shows were the swifflee Fiaz chatshows I've got tapes of those too!
