Default British Army: Use of Social Media in Psychological Warefare

We do know that pen is mightier than the sword. Let’s see how the keyboard is going to be mightier than the bullets.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-10014608.html

The British military is setting up a specialist force modelled on the Chindits, the commandos who gained renown through their daring missions behind enemy lines in Burma during the Second World War.
They will specialise in "non-lethal" forms of psychological warfare, using social media including Facebook and Twitter to "fight in the information age"…...

……The 2,000-strong brigade will have the same number, 77, and the same emblem – of a Chindit, a mythical Burmese beast – as the one under Brigadier Orde Wingate. But, as well as being ready for combat, the troops will be armed with modern skill sets including being adept in social media and new technology.

……The troops are supposed to deliver “means of shaping behaviour through the use of dynamic narratives” with teams focusing on psychological operations and interaction with the media. They will also take the lead in providing reconstruction and humanitarian assistance and help with strengthening civic society and local security forces.

The make-up of the brigade also reveals the shrinking size of the Army, with no less than 42 per cent of the recruits coming from the reserves. Increasing numbers of them are replacing regular troops amid cutbacks…..

…..“The brigade,” said the Ministry of Defence, “has been formed to respond to ever changing character of modern conflict and to be able to compete with agile and complex adversaries.” The Chindits “fought in such difficult conditions adopting a new type of warfare, using a mixture of original creative thinkers who integrated with local indigenous forces to multiply effects, the exact requirement for the modern age”.

Sorry for making mistake in the title. It should read Warfare, not Warefare; like some stupid Tupperware.

All well and good. The SAS have have in the past infiltrated & turned locals to help them(hearts & minds) but that was in the field.

Today the opposition is on the ground with AK47's & big machetes.Who would you side with? .

Personally, I don't like guns, machetes and bombs etc.

I wasn't criticising this new move, anyway. I was just bringing this news to people's attention here. I find it quite exciting, actually. It will be good to see how they do it.

If they're looking to recruit trolls, we have plenty of candidates here.

Yes, we do have some hard core key board warriors here. They should apply for the position with the British cyber army.

Look, if Facebook can give some people depression, then the army, via social media, can do allsorts to the minds of the enemies.

Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia have found that being envious of your Facebook friends can lead to depression, a finding that should give some of us pause. Based on a survey of 700 students, the study found that users who engage in “surveillance use” – “brows[ing] the website to see how their friends are doing compared with their own lives” – versus simply using the site to contact friends and family can experience symptoms of depression…

“We found that if Facebook users experience envy of the activities and lifestyles of their friends on Facebook, they are much more likely to report feelings of depression,” said Margaret Duffy, a professor at the MU School of Journalism. “Facebook can be a very positive resource for many people, but if it is used as a way to size up one’s own accomplishments against others, it can have a negative effect…”

On the basis of this power of the social media, it can be assumed that the wars can be won, minds can be altered and peace can be established by this official implementation of the British cyber army. I suspect that unofficially it has been on for a long while, anyway. I’m sure we have some self-nominated serial cyber snipers even here on SN that can 'virtually' slaughter anything and everything they come across.
