Holiday
The wife and I are wondering where to go for our 10th wedding anniversary in August. I fancy Miami, she fancies Cuba. Anyone been to either of these places? Good points and bad points please.

I've been to Cuba (about 15 years ago).
Pros
Lovely beaches
Nice people
Fascinating history
Fantastic music
Cons
I never had a decent meal whilst I was out there, including when I went to one of the most famous restaurants on the Island. Perhaps things have improved in that regard.

Pattaya Thailand - a no brainer.
+ Weather , cheap drink ( But not wine), 5 star hotels , brilliant cuisine, good beaches , quick access to Phuket , Koi Sumui and Phi Phi island. Night life brilliant , 20+ golf courses , oh yeah a pub called TDB's !

Funny how people have different perspectives: I didn't really rate Pattaya.
OK the hotel (Royal Cliff beach resort) and beaches was superb. But the town itself didn't inspire me much. Seemed rather seedy. Its been a long time since I visited it though, so maybe its cleaned up its act since.
Miama is nice. Big area so obviously where your hotel is located is critical unless you go hiring cars. Negatives? Its Florida, I don't know, can't quite pin point it, I guess as a sight-seeing point of view its just a bit vanilla. Pleasent enough though..

Why not try something a little more interesting like this.
https://www.explore.co.uk/holidays/p...hul-highlights
They also do Cuba and many other places, my next one will be Cambodia.
You can also do your own tailor made tour.

Depends what you want from a holiday. Cuba would seem to have more to see and do I'd have thought.
Personally I'd go east. Although August might not be a good time. As above, I recently visited India and thought I'd hate it, but loved it. But I really don't do beach holidays and chilling out all day. I will have plenty of chill time when I'm dead.
Not to say I don't like a beach, but I need more.
I'm going to Orlando for a conference on Sunday and I'm not particularly excited about it. yet to do west US but looking for opportunities.

I wouldn't hire a car for Miami as the towing is out of control and it will cost you $300 to get your car back if you don't know the right place to park also you could drive to somewhere you really shouldn't be.
There are constant day trips to Key West and if you were there a little more time there is a ferry which will take you to the Bahamas.

I agree with Ali, I've not been to Pattaya but everybody I know who has have not been impressed.
Also large parts of Thailand were nice twenty years ago but now have been over developed.
Personally I can't see the fascination with with Florida either, fat yanks and amusement parks, my idea of hell.
Horses for courses I suppose.

I'm assuming you mean the Maldives?
I second that idea, I'm off there in April. Obviously no real culture, history etc but so so relaxing and the diving/snorkeling is second to none.

Been to Miami and Holguin in Cuba
Miami is great but its the sort of holiday where you will be out and about and probably get little time to rest as there is so much to see and do, If this is what you like to do when on holiday then this would be the best option, personally I would just get a fly-drive and maybe book the hotels online and not go through a travel agents(there wont be a shortage of hotels, so if you dont like the one your in, drive to another one)
Cuba on the other hand is more of a hotel based holiday where you will spend most of the time relaxing as there is not really much to do outside of the hotels(apart from a trip to Havana) we have always had all-inclusive, so your pretty much pampered throughout your stay, and you dont really spend a lot of money once there.
Both great places, but I have a young son, and Cuba is the better option for us at the moment, we go again on August 27th and I cant wait!!!
This is the hotel we stop in when visiting Cuba!!

If it's diving, snorkeling etc you are after then the Maldives would probably suit you much better. Mauritius has other things to offer but in times of marine life the Maldives it is pretty difficult to beat in terms of quality and accessibility.
Actually, this thread reminds me that I need to get an underwater GoPro thing before I go in Easter.

Went to the Maldives before we had kids (when we were DINKIES)
The snorkelling is *stunning* - right off the jetty - the diving was good too but the currents between the islands are a bit dicey!
In fact I'd love to take the kids now - just for the snorkelling alone, it was that good..... BUT and its a big but with kids... there is *NOTHING* else to do on whichever little island you end up on - its either snorkelling or punting - that's your daily choice (or maybe a spot of both) - hehehehe

That's why that place doesn't appeal to me.
I don't go on holiday to read books on the beach, and just be in the waters. Although water activities have great health value and they're very recreational, but not for all days of my holiday, No. When I'm away, I like to read the place itself, and the richness it offers; in terms of local people; culture; traditions; life style, history; arts and crafts. Books I can read at home or in the office, no problem. I'll find Maldives terribly boring.

What about Sorrento? We stayed at the Nastro Azzuro hotel, superb for couples, we've been twice in recent years and will be going back in the near future.
