How many other peeps having to work today?
Was told if we wanted a holiday it was coming out of our annual leave. Not happy about coming in, then get in to find one of the offices upstairs dumped a bin bag outside on Fri - crows/gulls etc demolished it, crap everywhere. Open bag dumped upstairs - hope they're off, and it's nice and smelly.
Boss just in, says "road's are very quiet today" - yeah, really, wonder why???
Praise the lord for Scoobynet, and speedy internet in the office.
Mike.

I'm in coz the rest of the world is....
Can't see how they can make you take it out of your annual leave, especially today as it is a proper Bank Holiday. I get a day off in lieu for working.

I think your boss may well be taking the p!ss, today is as far as I know an official bank holiday and don't think it can be taken out of your annual entitlement, if you are that peeved (I certainly would be) I would check it out and get an official answer on the legal front and then go to town on your employer if they have made you work an official bank holiday!

I'm also working this morning, but when you work for yourself there is no such thing as a bank holiday. Having the afternoon off, but then working all day tomorrow

Today is an officially paid bank holiday.
Tommorrow however isn't, and I think you'll find (correct me if I'm mistaken) most employees will reduce your annual holiday by one day but will pay you for Tuesday.

Both today and tomorrow are official Bank Holidays, under the terms of the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971. Officially, today is the Golden Jubliee bank holiday and tomorrow is the Spring Bank Holiday.
Normally your t&c's of your employment contract state that the company will pay you for official bank holidays. It is unlikely that you will be docked a days holiday unless you have a very picky firm who obviously have little idea of employee relations!

From the Evening Standard.... it looks like there is a difference between a Bank Holiday and a Public Holiday. By the way I work for a Bank and I'm in.
Bank holidays "should be made law"
Unions have called for paid Bank Holidays to be made law after plumbers in Scotland and Northern Ireland were ordered to work through the Jubilee.
While colleagues in England and Wales enjoy a paid day off, they could have their pay docked because the industry federation has decided it should be business as usual.
The TUC has called on the Government to change the law so that Bank Holidays are given the same status as public holidays like Christmas Day.
Bobby Buird, of the Amicus electrical and engineering union, called the federation's decision "spiteful".
"It is a scandal. It is complete nonsense. It is unrealistic because most of the construction sites will be closed on that particular day," he told the BBC.
"It seems terrible that the only building and construction industry employees who will not be afforded a public holiday is the plumbers in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
However, employment relations minister Alan Johnson suggested that changing the law could be a regulation too far that could hit employment levels.
He said: "We would have to look at what the effect would be. We have done an awful lot in a short time.
"Companies have had to come to terms with the national minimum wage, the right to four weeks' paid holiday, the right to rest breaks, extra maternity leave, paternity leave coming in, help for adoptive parents.
"There is no question that you could overburden business to a degree where you do start effecting employment levels."

Uncle Buck - have you met him?
He was in this morning, for roughly an hour, hasn't been seen since. Nothing new there then....
Getting a bit fed up now. ScoobyLoobyLou took a half day, nothing doing with them - T on the table when I get home - that'll be shining bright!
Mike.

Well, I'm off all week!!
BUT, I have to work for the national average of £250 a day!!
I have Flexi-Time and 33 days leave to make up for it though!
All in all, ok I suppose!

At work yesterday and today. Mostly working, too!
I'm told that Civil Servants get Wednesday off, additionally, as a "priviledge day." I expect that such a day exists because our law makers (MPs) realise that if all the civil servants are off then THEY can't possibly do any work either.
Ergo - MPs will get themselves ANOTHER holiday - then again, don't they break up this month anyway, until October?
