...since the start of the first world war. 37 million people lost their lives in 4 years.

Without them we wouldn't be in such a good position as we are now, but it is a shame things do still happen...humans are humans worst enemy.

WW1 was supposed to be 'the war to end all wars'
950,000 British and Dominian soldiers killed and 16 million in total. It's unimaginable the scale of this in today's context.
The thing that stands out for me is the sheer bravery of those men (and boys)
We will be turning out the lights at 11pm tonight - RIP

As daylight returns
The fires of hope still burn
Crawl through darkened light
Sickened by the mournful sight
Tears fall from eyes
Not sure what has been done
Sorrow creeps throughout my soul
All is lost, none have won
The battle smoke remains
Begin to feel the pain
Alone now stagger on
Unsure how it begun
Through time war prevails
Thoughts fears cast aside
Face the consequence alone
With honour - valour - pride
As fire fills the sky
We once believed in life
Now time to die
...For Victory
Now in deaths glory
Mans final destiny
The final price to pay
...For Victory
"They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them."
"We will remember them"

10pm I thought.
It was all different times of course, the lower classes were sacrificed at the behest of some petty feuding ruling elites .

Lights out and candle lit at 10pm, then contemplate for an hour until 11pm, the exact moment Britain entered the war 100 years ago today.
I can highly recommend watching 'All Quiet on the Western Front' from 1930, 'La Grande Illusion' from 1937 and 'Paths of Glory' from 1957 if you get the chance.

My Grandad served with the Royal Engineers, all i know is he served from the 25 Sept 1916 to 30 Jan 1919. He was treated for influenza in Fusehill War Hospital in Carlisle and was given 3 days Field punishment for breaking some wood in a hut.
He passed away a few months after i was born
I have my Candle in the window and the lights off

To OP, thank you for posting a 100 year message. I would like to add my name to it.
As a father I watched my boy grow up and every now and again my mind turned to the image of some young lad lying injured , cold and hungry in the mud waiting in vain to be rescued with a tear in his eye for his family back home. I salute you.
========
My f-in-l was one of 7 boys. He was the youngest and stayed at home but all his brothers served and, incredibly, all came back - one with some shrapnel in his leg which stayed with him.
I do think the ceramic poppies are wonderful.
