I got flashed by a Gatso earlier today.

Nothing strange there I hear you say!

This time it was a double flash as I was driving toward a camera on the opposite side of the road (single carriageway).

Can you get done in this way?

Also, I was doing between 65-70 in a 60 zone, would have thought it would have taken a bit more speed to trigger the ******

Unhappy

IIRC technically they can work both ways. But this is the first I've heard of it happening

I take it you were the only person in range of the camera?

Must admit I was very surprised when it happened. Especially as I wasn't going particularly fast.

Cool

They do work the other way, but aren't calibrated so you won't be done.

I've been flashed a few times by a gatso on the other side of the road while heading towards it - never got a summons though ! I was told it is caused by odd reflections by the approaching car. (Not too sure on this theory though!)

I have been flashed a few times in scotland from the other side and thought I had drove over the white line by mistake but this only happens when it rains for some wierd reason and a few of my mates have said the same thing aswell so I would not worry too much unless it was a proper forward facing camera which they were supposed to be bringing out soon but were illegal to take a forward picture of you without your consent.

As far as I know - even if it were to take an accurate measurement and picture from the otherside - you would have just driven over (in the time between the two photos) any white markings on the road (as they are normally behind the car on the rear facing Gatsos) and so they wouldn't be able to give a visual confirmation of your speed and therefore you cannot be done.

I have been flashed from the other carriageway and received nothing.

Have been flashed a few times by a Gatso on the opposite side of a couple of dual carriageways. Nothing came of any of them (although I hope it didn't upset anyone on the other side too much).

Northamptonshire (where else) has some cameras that can actually do you on approach to them. There's one just slightly north of Kettering (I forget exactly where).

BTW, a colleague of mine was done for doing 82 mph on the M4 in Wales not so long ago. Was a mobile camera I think but it seems they're clamping down over there.

Happy (!) to say this has also happened to me on various occasions along a stretch in Edinburgh, with no result.
It's actually illegal for the camera's to flash when you're driving toward them, especially at night, as the theory goes you could in effect be blinded and end up in a ditch.

I've come across a couple which seem to flash for no apparent reason too when there's no oncoming traffic in either direction within distance (a good few hundred yards too).

Question

What about those camera's on dual carrigways that are on the left. If you are speeding in the outside lane, can they get you?? I've always assumed not, although never been man enough to really try it, just incase!!

I hate to rain on your parade, but there are a few digital (2 round pinkish windows) cameras around here, and they can shoot both ways, and you can be done.

Re the triggering speed, I'm afraid that's down to the local preference. I went past a camera in Aylesbury at 30 recently and the **** catching up with me got caught, yet he could have been doing no more than 33-35.

I understand that they used to work on a 10% + margin, but that's gone out of the window. Northants Police recently got someone with one of their 'safety camera vans' doing the terrifying speed of 78 on the M1.

Wink

Noodle....just go for it and see what happens.....

Joking.

You'll find it's actually catching the other side, but to me, some of them are actually facing slightly inward to the oncoming lanes, which does cause some confusion.

Sometimes these cameras go wrong as well. I saw a camera on the A4 in London flashing like mad - at the traffic going perpendicular to it!

Did the camera flash only once or twice ?

This happens to me a lot traveling along the dual carriageay A1 into Edinburgh.

IIRC the camera needs to flash twice to measure the distance you have travelled in a set period of time.

I've never received a NIP for this - even on single carriageway roads

I suppose they might work the other way but there would not be any white line markings on the road that they need to refer to, so they wouldn't be able to calculate your speed.
