Default Itchy earhole....infection?

My left ear. I awoke from a Sunday afternoon nap with my left ear itching so deep inside and so much that I wanted to poke something into it to relieve the itch.
Happily, sense prevailed and I relieved it with my finger as far as possible. I also put warm water in it, in order to float out an insect in case one had gone in. No result.

Since then, I've had three more episodes. They come on without warning and are so itchy they are almost impossible to live with. Last night I spilled coffee over myself when it came on suddenly. Then they stop almost as quickly.

I have an appointment to see a doctor on Thursday morning (earliest I could get in).

Two questions: Is this likely to be an infection?
And what can I do to relieve it at present?

OK...bring on the comedy....but let's hope there are a FEW sensible posts

Fill your ear with oil of the baby oil nature or you can use olive oil, that's what they do if you get an insect in your ear as it will kill it, then lie down with dodgy ear side down and it will slip out with the oil, wait a few mins though so offending object can die.

Resist putting anything solid in your ear.

A doctor friend of mine once told me that the only thing you should put in your ear is your elbow!!!

It's probably just excess ear wax. Olive oil will soften it, but you'll need to put a few drops in twice a day for a week or so. Then go and see your GP to get it syringed.

Micro suction is a better bet than syringing. But this might not be needed!

Reflecting on some of the above issues the problem could also not be due to an excess of ear wax but could also be due to a lack of it. The OP could have one of a number of problems ranging from otitis externa to an unusual allergy (have seen a few swimmers get itchy ear holes).

Either way I'd get your quack to have a look if it's bothering you.

Yes, very funny...like on the cartoons when Tom Cat's eardrum flies out of his ear....and it's a tiny drum!

At least you haven't got an itchy arsehole, could get very messy using your fingers

Joking aside it is most likely stuck ear wax, i suffered the same a while back. I tell you what, whether you need it or not a quick syringe with warm water by your local GP makes a hell of a difference to your general hearing, even if you believe your hearing is fine.

Stick the end of Dyson vac pipe to your ear, and switch the vac on. It should suck all the sh7t out. I can't see it failing due to its astounding 'no loss of suction' cyclonic super action.

The only danger is that it may also suck your brain out. Then again, it may not, if the organ is absent.

If it doesn't go away soon definitely get it looked at - don't do what I did as a 16 year old and leave it....and leave it......

Turns out my itchiness was an infection - by the time it was looked at it had started to dissolve my mastoid bone.

Nearly 30 years and 10 operations later it's still not cured.
All my little ear bones have dissolved away and I've had a titanium implant inserted to try and restore some hearing - my body is now rejecting that and it's working its way through my eardrum.
Got to now wait until it drops out.

My next OP will be to use some of my own cartilage to make a 'real' prosthesis bone to do the job of the rejected one.

I now have a massive problem with tinnitus, and that's permanent.

Don't want to alarm you Jeff......

Jesus..........

It's not done it so much today, so I was thinking of cancelling my appointment. I shall go anyway now, just to let him look for any sign of infection.

Look, if it has stopped itching, just cancel the appt with the doc. Don't waste his time, he has much worse cases to attend. it could have been just some fluff in your ear, you know. If this sort of unbearable itch persists for two weeks or so, then re-book with your doc. Otherwise, man up and put up with it.

Am I the only one that misread the subject title?

Clicked on thinking this was going to be a great thread, taking the P1ss out of Alcazar, and his itchy @rsehole.

Oh well.

Today BOTH ears are very painful and sensitive inside.
Plus, when I bend over and then straighten up, loads of clear fluid runs out of my left nostril and sometimes both.

I THINK my sinuses may be infected and will be keeping my appointment.

Oh, right. In that case, get it looked at. My ears go dead itchy with my sinusitis and ENT troubles. So, yeah. It could be your sinuses infected.
