Bah, I saw the thread Southern before here

Yup, Alton Towers is not far up the road from me. Nice to meet you folks on home turf - I really enjoyed Brands Hatch September (I think) last year.

I'm pushing for August 11/12 weekend now.

Got me a season ticket anyway, can't get too much rollercoaster action myself

Cool

I'm arranging a trip from deep south one weekend, either mid July or Mid August. Was thinking of coming up and driving the peak district Saturday and doing Alton Towers the Sunday. Any interest from the locals?

For early rollercoaster fun join Staffs Meet!!! Not exactly Alton Towers, but you may want to go easy on the breakfast...

Just keeping this alive. We are trying to decide what town/city to spend Saturday night in. Hotels within walking distance of boozin essential. Maybe Derby? What do you guys suggest?
Cheers

What sort of accomodation are you looking for Chuck - big chain hotel, smaller country hotel, B&B etc?

I'm about 15 miles from Alton Towers (Stoke-on-Trent) - I'd suggest looking this way rather Derby as it's closer.

If you've got somewhere in mind, let me know and I can check it out.

Cheers,

ChrisB.

What are you after, hotel wise? I pressume you will want a safe, secure car park.

I live in Derby, (well I do go home there occasionally), so if you want any advice, ask.

Whats the nightlife in Stoke on trent like? Basically we are looking for somewhere close to a few decent bars
Safe parking would be nice. Makes me think somewhere like Derby might be harder to arrange at a reasonable cost. I dunno really. Usually when I come up there I stay at me mum's in Mansfield - then the car gets locked in the garage with my sister's car blocking the door just for extra safety. But Mansfield is scary
I'd say a travelodge with easy access to the town centre would probably suit most people. The bigger tarts may want a posher place.
In summary. Hotel with safe carpark within walking distance of town centre and an hours drive of AT. Maybe up to 10 car loads of soft Southerners.
Cheers!

Stoke-on-Trent is something of weird place to outsiders, as it's actually made up of six smaller towns (Stoke, Longton, Burslem, Tunstall, Fenton and Hanley)

Hanley is now the shopping and nightlife centre for SoT. The other towns have pubs etc but most people go up to Hanley. Three clubs I can think of, but they are quite often invaded by the under 18s. Absolute top notch balti house in Hanley called

Should be pretty safe with a hoard of pissed up Scooby owners

Mind you, the Shandy is stronger up here so our vistors will have to take it easy.

I can definitely agree with that one........as we went over it was....

I never knew Staffordshire had roads like that, it was certainly an education for me...and I have lived in Staffordshire all my life!

What, you mean you don't drink the contents of the drip trays down south? Bah - considered something of a delicacy up 'ere.

Hmm, watch out for Michelle's defination of "road". Some of the one's near her house I've been down with her are narrower than my drive at home!

Otherwise, If you need a hand, let me know and I'll cower in the foot-well making notes

Does everyone like Baltis? A trip to Shaffers is essential but is worth booking in advance for a larger party.

Cool

If you are after night life its normally up 'Castle (Newcastle-under-Lyme) on Fridays and Hanley on Saturdays.

Basically Newcastle-U-L is purely pubs and banks and a few restaurants [ ]. I prefer 'castle myself as all the pubs are very close together and one or two have a late license at the weekend till 1.00am . Hanley is more spread out and involving a longer crawl . Plenty of taxis to and from Hanley and Newcastle so no problem and they are only about 3 miles apart.

Let me know when and where and I will be up for a shandy .
