Default 1997 STI TYPE R

Hi all, I'm new here and new to Subarus. I've had my Type R a week now, put a couple of hundred miles on it...........loving it! Not had a proper B-road blast yet due to the weather, hopefully get chance to get it out soon. I'll be keeping a log of everything I do here. So far plans are -

- Remap, just sorting this out with Duncan from Race dynamics. Only for reliability purposes, not chasing big numbers

-Get a decent steering wheel to remove the tacky one currently fitted

- Underseal - car has been in the UK 4 years and not been undersealed. I want to keep it rust free as much as possible

That's it for now, just going to enjoy it and maintain it really, no big plans. Will get a trackday booked in the next couple of monts too.

Some crappy street pics, will get some decent ones somewhere more scenic when I get chance

You want a nice Momo steering wheel on it. The version 4 changed to a Nardi one.

Well I didn't get off to the best start with Subaru ownership - shortly after changing the oil the bottom end developed a knock .

So after going through the options with various different companies I've decided to use Andy Williams of Williams Motorsport for a rebuild. Car was collected this morning.....................next update should be a good one!

Well she's back in action. Had a complete rebuild done by Andy Williams motorsport. New spec:

STI forged pistons with new rings and newage sti rods
Cometic head gaskets
New oil pump
New water pump
New Cambelt
ACL bearings
STI crank
New Exedy pink box clutch kit

Whilst they were at it I had group B motorsport supply and fit a new ESL ECU and map it for me. It's making a fairly modest 305bhp......but a rather impressive 320lbs of torque after they ran in the new engine on the dyno. The mid range pull now is fantastic, the graph has a great curve. So that should be all bases covered......new built engine, new clutch and all mapped up.....hopefully wont have to worry about anything for a long time to come!

Looks great mate, first time I've seen this thread. Bet it goes very well! Have you noticed an improvement in fuel consumption ? Guessing it will have been over furling like crazy before the remap?

To be honest, I never got to drive it enough before the engine went to really be able to comment on the fuel consumption! I will do an MPG calculation between next fill ups and let you know what it's getting now. The difference in the mid range is very noticeable, although peak power may not be up massively, it's got so much more pull across the whole rev range.

Shame it all went bad but at least you now have a fresh engine in a lovely looking classic.

Out of interest, how did you change the oil before it went pop and what did you use. Did you fill the filter before fitting and then crank over to get pressure before firing ??

No, it was running unmapped with a decat and full exhaust. I had an ESL daughter board fitted along with the rebuild to allow it to be mapped.

I followed the correct process, filling the filter and building oil pressure. I used millers 10 40 fully synth and a genuine subaru oil filter. I think it was just bad luck and coincidence to be honest!
