Default Renault 5 GT Turbo rebirth!

Thought I'd show you a little Renault 5 GT Turbo I just restored which took alot longer than first thought as we needed to remove the dash to sort some wiring faults along with the heater.

Much better than last time I saw it, but are you really surprised to find electrical faults with an 80s Renault

On to the V-Dub next then

Always liked the R5GTT from school age on, long time ago now lol. Even had a pic of one on my bedroom wall Almost got one as my first car but changed mind at last minute & went for a mk1 Golf GTi ... found out a few months later that the R5 was 2 cars welded together

TX.

I test drove an R5 GTT many years back, the rear had been repaired badly, the speedo didnt work, and the steering required Thor to operate it at low speed. I wasnt impressed, that is until I got it out on the main road. I would still consider one now, as long as it had the overheating in traffic problem sorted.

There was a guy on camp putting an STI engine in a Fiesta. Dont know if you remember Fiesti? It all seemed to fizzle out.

But you could argue that not a lot flies around Cartoontown given the serviceability rates of the AT Fleet

Ryan, what sort of money would that have cost to restore it to its original (factory) condition from what it was?

Their reputation was a side effect of Renault 'Tuners' such as K-Tec and GT Tuning selling bleed valves. Kids would fit them, wind up the boost and consider the fuelling. Result; blown head gasket, and one very hard to shake reputation.

Get a warm feeling seeing this classic french pocket rocket looking mint.

Great job there!

I have fond memories of the old Renaults as my old man used to work for them for over 30 years and they were all we ever had as cars.!

I grew up with the mk1 5's and had a Gordini and eventually a Gordini Turbo

Great little cars at the time and having my old mad bring a regular supply of used parts home helped keep them on the road as they were tempremental to say the least with hot running a major issue!!

Remeber my old man bring home a phase 2 5 GT Turbo once and taking me for a blast and it was the first car that I felt a REAL Turbo rush in after the boost pumped up..

He used to hate them though as they were always in for hot running issues and the sort at the dealership where he worked

I always loved the the wide arched Turbo 2's though...

And dont forget the ability to eat clutch cables, due to the cable being routed over the turbo - iirc

Thanks for kind words boys, means alot.
It belongs to a customer who has owned the car since 1995 and is Renault mad
The job was a major one, here is the list of jobs undertaken

new bonnet
new doors
new tailgate
new inner sills
new outer sills
new out riggers
floor pan pieces made and welded in
quarter panels piece's made and welded in
part of N/S/F inner wing made and welded in
part of rear boot floor made and welded in
wheel refurbishment
new front/rear glass
new badges all round
new heater motor
faulty wiring loom replaced behind dash
full service and MOT

I haven't sat down and worked it all out yet but it's safe to say it will top 5K without trying but it does look like it just rolled out of the showroom and the client is over the moon with the outcome

And yes the bumper strips should be black but the customer requested them to be body coloured.
