Classic Rally Car
Had a busy past week or so finally got my new impreza ready.First off we had a go at the Pirelli international rally our very first attempt at such a big rally and a rally i have allways wanted to do.We did the tour of Cumbria with mainly ex WRC cars and experianced drivers wel above our league but thanks to killer kielder and us just about staying on the road we came home 6th overall and and 3rd in class behind 2x british champion jonny milner and steve petch both in WRC cars so got ourselves another wee trophy lol Well pleased considering i had never drove the car even on the road before the rally and only had the car finnished the day before the rally + i have never drove a car with such power on gravel.Big thanks to steve simpson at TEG sport for getting the car running nicely aswell after stevie wonder mapped it previously lol
Onboard (starting to get the feel of it lol)

Some of the competition including ex mcrae 22b
This weekend we had a go at our local event and came home 11th overall another very pleasing result but could of been much better if i didnt get the car stuck on top of a pile of rubble lol

Thanks mate fingers crossed our luck lasts lol
The pirelli was expensive mate something like 850 entry for around 70 stage miles + pacenotes, fuel, fuel for chase and service barge etc but most forest rallies are in region of 450 for 40 odd stage miles.Single venues like the one we did on sunday are much cheaper that one cost 200 for 36 miles and they are great fun aswell + you stay in 1 place the whole day and there is something for your service crew to watch however i prefer the forests myself
Car was running something like 270bhp at the wheels mate although there is more to be had.One hell off a differance from the 1400 205 XS i have been using previous lol

It can be done on a budget mate but its not the cheapest sport around and costs a lot more than trackdays. Its more the startup costs which are the expensive bit ie pair of helmets, intercom box and 2x fire suits cost us £2000 in january althought once you have them thats it for a while or at least until MSA decide to change the rules that is but i guess you could buy used items but its your safety at the end of the day.No reason why you cant buy a cheap car thats also cheap to maintain and run you can pickup a cheap car for around 2k like a 205 or nova something like that.My 205 costs about £100 in petrol to use on a forest rally where as i wont tell you how much the fuel in the subaru cost lol.So once you have the gear it just a case of entry fees and running the car basically.Again tyres arnt cheap something like £100each new for subaru and you need at least 2 sets per forest rally but again you can pickup part worn tyres for as little as £20each

Looks like you had a great day, and congrats on the result. That video illustrates to me just how punishing a sport rallying is, both on man and machine.

Thats it cage, seats, belts, fire systems, cut off then lines inside, welding the shell up,film on windows and then onto upgrades brakes, suspension, guards mudflaps etc its cheaper and less hassle buying an already built car. This car we bought built but we completly stripped it as it was previously a tarmac rally car.Have built many cars in the past from scratch which i prefer to do really

Sounds good.
Ive been looking at the BMW series which follows the 205 challenge for a few years, but id really love to do similar in a scooby!
Seems a typical scooby prepped goes for around 10-15k on piston heads.
Know of anywhere else i should be looking?
Going to have a year off the scooby scene but then gonna come flying back in at full pelt, and this could be a fun re-entry
Can you do it non-competativly (but still timed) for a day without a fully FIA approved kit? I.e. perhaps out of date FIA approved stuff?
Seems in date FIA approved stuff commands a much higher premium. Im not advocating being unsafe, just that if it was safe enough last year why isnt it this year kinda thing. Would hate to spend 15k on a car, to only have to spend another 15k next year when FIA change their minds on cage spec etc?

Everything needs to be FIA Standard mate cars are scruitineered before every event.Cages dont go out of date and seats and belts last up to 5years each something like that then its just a case of keep fire systems serviced.Your not going to by a car then suddenly over night its no use that wont happen.Even when seats and belts go out of date as long as there still in good order they still fetch good money so you would get more than enough to buy new items.Your talking around that for a good impreza but i have seen cheaper.I sold one in janury ready to rally for £5k which was a bargain. It was pretty basic but still had the required parts + uprated suspension, anti lag etc so you do see cheap ones
