Default See I don't just draw Scoobs

I did this last week for a friend of mine (Flix on here). Basically since having the 205 GTI, he's done loads of small jobs and helped me get to know the car. So I decided to draw his own 205 GTI track car as a suprise. Believe it or not, I started it last Wednesday at 4pm and finished it the next day at 6pm. I obviously had a couple of pee breaks etc., and about 45mins kip in there somewhere

He doesn't post on here much, so I thought I would share the pics as I have only ever had Scoob's on here. Pics aren't the best quality so apologies for this.

(**Disclaimer** Hope it's not classed as spamming etc - that's not my intention)...

Original pic I worked from...

Have to admit, I really enjoyed doing this one for a few reasons.

1. It was a suprise and the anticipation was quite an adrenaline rush.
2. I did it as a personal challenge to see if I could do it over a set timescale.
3. I usually draw stationary cars, and thus found this challenging as it's a moving car taking the line on an oncoming corner. Rarely do any background either.

Thanks for the comments guy's.

I use a system of squares and copy the proportion of space across. This way I can scale up pieces to whatever size I require. You could argue "oh, he just copies it square by square", but if you actually watched me in my method, you would see its totally different to this. I do get some help from this way, but it's only a similar way to an artist using their pencil for proportion etc. Shading, thats all done by eye, and it gives me nasty headaches sometimes.

Your right, and I would have to charge a lot more and get a whole saler to supply me with the bloody things.

I'll have to give that "grid system" a try one day, I usually draw cars free hand by eye....

Great drawing though, you ever noticed how you learn all the curves and details of a car, only when drawing it. I drew a ford focus RS in pencil a few years ago for a mate, and the detail was incredible, I never forgot the lines of a focus RS from that day lol...

Yes definitely. As I've mainly drawn scoobs, it makes it easier as you seem to know what lines match up where. This is why when I did the Peugeot it was a challenge, as it was something new to learn. An advantage being though, I had the same car sat outside incase I needed to check anything.

I mainly use the grid system as said for proportion and perspective to get an accurate reflection of what I'm drawing. I think this is because naturally I am a technical illustrator. I'm fascinated by things like architecture and angles/degree's, so when I find a way of making my pieces more realistically proprtionate, I sure as hell use it. Having said this, I did used to just do them by eye, but found it frustrating as my sight isn't the best in the world (major operation when i was 18 months old as I was born cross-eyed).

Great work there. You have some fantastic natural talent

Once things get sorted with your current employer, is there no career you could go into where you could put this talent to use? People would kill to have such talent come naturally, it would be ideal if you could use it in a job.

I know. It would be my way to secure a decent wage hopefully and then be able to start a family and get married. The whole employer thing is whats holding me back from doing this.

I've sent a CD off with examples of my work to 'mrthedge2u2' (sp?) as he knows a lady who may be able to help me. But I've said it a few times before, where I live, there is nothing to help my ambitions, as I need a big city with designers all over the place. But I can't relocate either due to circumstance...

My son did me a characature of my first Scoob - you've seen them, all big wheels, spoilers, over emphasised scoop etc. It was every bit as good as the prints you see at shows and best of all, it was MY car! He's one of those frustrating people who have a real talent but takes no advantage of it.
I bet there are lots of people out there who would love a "cartoon" or true likeness, like CO'B's, of their car.
