Askew's New Toy/Winter project
After getting bored with navigating rally cars, the time came to swap seats and have a twirl with the funny round thing that gets drivers into all sorts of trouble
But what car? Scooby? Nope too expensive...and already got one
Nova? Cheap but front wheel drive..
Mk1/Mk2 escort... mmmmmmm yeah baby!!! but fetching silly money
Until one of the lads in the motor club said I know of a cheap escort going... bit tatty but it'll keep you occupied... so off we went to have a look... he was right it was messy but it wasn't "just" tatty.... it was rotten, the chassis legs had gone through, the floor had more holes to be filled than a lesbian fisting contest and it was listed on HPi having had a whack sometime in its life
Gutted just wasn't the word... Dejected we left the workshop...
Hang on said the chappie I have summat that may help... So off we followed into a barn where a gleaming Ford Diamond white road car sat...the shell was immaculate, no rot, no structural welding done - kerchiiing thats the puppy...admittedly it wasn't logbooked as a rallycar but thats easy to do..
And he'd have a deal on it for the same sort of money as the rally car.. wahey!! RESULT!!
So here she is - 3 weeks on - havent done much except rip out the passenger seat and resit the headlights properly
The previous owner had done a bit
2.1 litre Pinto with a weber twin choke
5 spd box
Capri sport struts and front brakes
9in drums on the back
Fit a snap off steering wheel (yuck)
RS1800 badges (oh how I wish!)
I've got a rollcage in the garage that she came with, I'll fit when I can steal a welder from a mate...
I've managed to blag some Kevlar backed FIA seats and harnesses, so all I gotta do is ask Santa for a plumbed in fire extinguisher for Xmas and drag my *** out into the cold to relocate the battery to the boot
Should do its first roadrally by February, probably an AWMCC championship event and leaving the WAMC stuff til 2006 (although the Greenleaves is tempting next Novemeber) by which time she should be logbooked for our first stage event
Nervous moi?
Hope you like
Rich

A friend used to have an RS1800 with a 2.1 pinto & twin choke.....complete barrel of laughs - especially when using the RS wheels it came with and their Firestone tyres. We decided to change to the other set of wheels when we couldn't get out of an uphill junction due to the lack of traction! Reduced the ****-out action to managable levels (ie; not every corner) but still so much fun to drive!
And it was insured on classic car insurance for peanuts.
Good luck with the project - can't really go wrong with a Mk2!!

Stokesy - silver heap can rot for all I care until someone takes it off my hands LOL
Dyney - I've taught myself to weld and everything!! There aint too many difficult things to do on a MK2.. pop rivett or hit with a hammer so far
Dave - its running Avons at the min which aint too bad in the dry until provoked - fooking mentally sideways in the wet and thats without a slipper diff (Santa if you're reading this...) just need a quickrack to haul it all back into shape easier
And its insured as a classic too - I actually laughed at the bloke when he quoted me - Fully comp inc on rally cover for about what I pay a month for the Impreza LOL

Go out right now, do not pass go and paint behind the grill black, as far as I'm concerned a non black behind the grill area on a mkII should be punishable by death!!!
Other than that, sweet, I want another!

more holes to be filled than a lesbian fisting contest
Rich Askew "Ladies Man"
Congratulations on finding something that's got your (automotive!) juices running again Rich. Any chance we could talk you into some track days in it next year?
Be afraid - Karen's currently due to start the qualification drives for Formula Woman.
Come and see us both sometime over the Xmas holidays, mate.
