Quick trip to Scotland - great roads
#1
Here's a few pics of some fantastic roads I swept along this week Lost my notes of approximately where I was when I took them So hope you guys up there can pinpoint locations
On the way North to Glencoe

[/img]
Somewhere between Kinlochewe and Garve. There's also a wicked long, fast & wide stretch, but for obvious reasons I didn't stop...
Southern end of Loch Ness on B862 towards Fort Augustus

Hi eagle eyes Floppy D
Yep, they're 205/50/16s on an MY02 Sport - can't say I've noticed anything weird with the handling - what sort of problems should I expect with 16s rather than the 15s it came with as standard?

Missyc, hi there, great pictures, and makes me want to organise a trip up there, after Wales of course!
When you going to join us on a run out on wednesday nights?
Andy_s comes from whaley bridge to join us, so your not much further, and a sport is more than welcome.
After the mad pace of the south yorks scoobys, I could do with a sedate cruise around the countryside.
Are you not up for the evo triangle run? You would be more than welcome, although I don't know who you would share with at the hotel!!!!
Hope to see you again real soon,
chris.
ps, I still have your moby number from the run into derbyshire we did with Rusty Festa, I'll send you a text.

I certainly did enjoy myself As fate would have it I didn't find a campsite in time the first 2 nights, so did B&B. So I was only partially eaten alive by midgies .
I have a few more photos, but the ones above were an attempt to remind us how great the roads are. Here's a vague summary of the route (thanks to moses, JohnS, sandycam, hedgehog, Doogsy etc from the Scottish section for their best roads).
Started N Derbyshire, M6 to Carlisle
Up west side via Dumfries, Kilmarnock, over Ervine Bridge along Loch Lomond to Crianlarich.
A beautiful early morning drive around Loch Leven then up through Fort William and Glencoe with Ben Nevis looming large (fantastic road - and not too much traffic) in the morning sunlight. Onwards through Invergarry to the Kyle of Lochalsh, and over the (very expensive) bridge to Skye. (At this point I'd lost count of the number of 'wow's I'd exclaimed!). Next up to Gairloch via Lochcarron, Torridon and Kinlochewe.
The following morning, the coastal route through Ullapool, Scourie to the most northerly point of my journey - Durness and Balnakeil Bay - what a beach! Across to Tongue (arduous miles of single track road and loadsa motorhomes/caravans etc but excellent still). South via Lairg to Dornoch on the East coast, north of Inverness.
From Dingwall the **fantastic** road to Kinlochewe - and back again, to take the B road along Loch Ness, stopping to streth my legs and catch a glimpse of the Falls of Foyers, resting just outside Fort Augustus.
Finally, a moment at Spean Bridge Commando Memorial, then back through Fort William and Oban (loads of scoobs!) past the monument at Dalmally, passing Loch Lomond once again. From Paisley, cut across to Strathaven and Hamilton. (South - had the company of a Black Octavia for the entire length of the M74/A74M to Carlisle. Made that stretch a little more fun!). From Carlise along the A6 to Penrith, then across to Keswick, Windermere and through the valley to Lancaster. Close enough to home, so hopped onto the M6 and up the dark and misty Cat and Fiddle (to pass half a dozen scoobs motoring in the other direction). Buxton then home. Phew!

A few more pics
Left the A82 for a leisurely drive along Loch Leven
View from Kinlochleven
Not entirely sure where the next few were taken as I lost my notes (a couple from Skye)
Far North Balankiel Bay near Durness - incredibly beautiful day, 29 degrees Let the motor cool off for an hour or so and took a much needed stroll along the beach
Fort Augustus Caledonian Canal. Very busy here. A nice campsite just down the road
I think this is the descent towards Garve?
Falls of Foyers, Loch Ness on the B852 side.
Spean Bridge commandos monument in the early morning sun, burning the mists up out of the valleys
Soon to be heading South into England. Overlooking outskirts of Glasgow
Almost caught the sunset over Windermere before heading to Lancaster along the very twistie Lyth Valley (must be a favourite route for vintage car owners taking a sedate evening drive ou )

Oh, and if you visit the Commando memorial, it's worth making a visit to the Spean Bridge Hotel where they have a small Commando museum full of stuff from the WWII training camp up an Achnacarry.
You can also walk around the castle grounds in Achnacarry, but unfortunately there's nothing left of the Commando training camp. The scenery's wonderful, with lots of deer roaming around freely so worth a visit. There's also a waterfall behind the castle where one of the scenes from the Roby Roy film was shot.
I've a copy of the Commando Trail leaflet showing the area around Achnacarry Castle if anyones interested.

Hi Wiganer
I asked the Scottish guys to tell me their best roads and based my vague itinery on the responses. It was a last minute decision to have a blast over 5 days, so this wasn't a 'sightseeing' trip - next time Found campsites/B&B along the way. The summary on the previous page lists the main towns/villages on the route I took.
Hope you have as much fun as I did and take plenty of anti-midge lotion
