Gutted...

Well as some of you may have been aware, I was intending to get my final map done by bob (br developments) this Saturday.
Sunday I was meant to be in west Yorkshire for "Well Lane 3" and find out exactly how much power my 2.5litre conversion was going to have. And finally, I was going to be finishing the Sunday afternoon off at Elvington to do some high speed runs, quarter mile times etc....
All this week, I have been trying to get my car finished, and also, waiting on a part. However, yesterday morning, the part still hadn't arrived, and I decided I was going to have to run my car with out power-steering to get over to England for this weekend. The advice was given and followed, and I believed all was going to go well for myself to get the boat over.... but.. as always, when you want everything to work out, a problem occurred.
Early on today, some power-steering fluid managed to escape, and get on my heat wrap, surrounding the HKS Exhaust Manifold. This was whilst the car was being test driven by my local garage. With this happening, the fluid became very hot and had caught fire!! Luckily, my garage was experience, and it was put out with very little damage. The problem was fixed, and all seemed to be back on the road.
I went round to the garage to pick up the beast.
I was amazed on just how good it looked after some other mod's I was having fitted
This can be seen here, I hope you agree! :
At this point, I had about an hour or so before getting on the boat. I left the garage, and went back to my house. When I arrived home, I smelt a burning smell, and looked it was coming from, yep you guessed it the same area. I called up the garage, and they said that this was due to some still being left it, even after they cleaned it. They advised me to keep the car running to and to check to make sure nothing else was leaking. So, I left the car running to burn off the excess, and went off to finish my packing.
I kept on popping out and all seemed well! So I thought YeS!!!
I popped opened the bonnet, and looked closely around the engine bay, and one of the power-steering connectors had sprung unlike by, I guess, the pressure. At this point, it seemed too much of a risk to take the car to England, and I had to cancel the whole weekend. I am completely gutted to be honest
And what is even more annoying, is that after I cancelled it all, and just about to drive the car back to the garage, the door-bell rings, and who is it??? A courier company with the part I had been waiting for!! How annoying!!!! Even with this part down, another bit was missing from it So back to the drawing board..
I am glad the car is ok (wasn't much damage from the fire), and I think you must agree, it is looking much better now (though it didn’t look that bad last time!). I now can’t wait until it is finished.
Watch this space I guess.....

Might be best to remove the wrap and replace, as it may take a long time to burn off, and thre will always be that thought in the back of your mind about it.
It also gives a very important reminder that it is very good advice to carry a fire extinguisher with you at all times. I admit I dont do it myself, which is pretty silly, considering the nature of my cars.
PAS is very flammable, so be sure that all is well with your car before venturing too far.

Hi Christian: Very sorry to learn of your misfortune earlier today.
You may wish to consider entrusting your car to someone on the mainland who has Subaru experience and knows what they are doing in which case I would be happy to assist you in any way I could to ensure you got a proper job and a good deal.

Christian how heavy is the steering without the steering pump ????? ..... I remember that Andy F. told that in order to disconnect the steering pump you have to totally drain the steering fluid, is this correct ?????
Thanks,
Carlos H.

Christian, I take it that you are remote mounting the power steering resovoir like we discussed a while back I like the new inlet arrangement, far better
Having driven a scoob (Pat's) without power steering all I can say is it's heavy, very heavy, at low speed, full leverage required, you really have to put your back into it! But once rolling it's not too bad, appart from the constant little kickbacks that you feel through the steering wheel previously damped out by the power steering. It does however give you far more 'feel' but not enough to justify running without for evermore IMHO.

Mixit, your wheels look very much like the Prodrive PD7's, available from any Subaru dealer.
(I got mine on my last car from Holland and saved a few quid too )
