My 98 Type R owned for 17 years
Hi all, this is my 1st post on the forums but have been a Scooby owner for 17 years and often used the site as a reference point.
So here goes, this is my 98 type r which I have owned from new,it has NO mods what so ever and still has the factory fitted STI exhaust.
Has been SORN off the road for the last 6 years but its now time for her to come out to play again.Hope you enjoy the pictures and any comments welcome

The engine is still spot on Performance wise but not happy with a few of the bolts as they have started to rust slightly despite the fact it has been garaged for 6 years, also 2 of the reservoir I think the power steering 1 and the coolant aren't looking great so would like to address that. My biggest problem is the red top paint has cracked and peeled a fair bit which I believe is pretty common. How much would something like that cost to do.If anyone knows it would be helpful,On the whole I feel she is in pretty good shape for 17

Red top
It does BBB3, if you zoom the picture you will notice the right hand side has half the red paint missing which is the shinny bit and the left hand side has started to crack n peel, you can see a little shinny section, the red is a bit dull as it needs a clean but would probably cause it to crack more, think this is a common problem with the red tops

You need to remove the manifold to repaint it.
Frost do a crinkle red paint, it was a good match, they then changed it so it was more orange than red. I think it's back to the proper red colour now, but not sure.

That's very nice you don't see many standard any more IMO I would be very careful painting bits as your car looks so genuine how it is unless your going to go the whole hog and restore the whole engine bay I would leave it alone very easy to make it look tarted up.

Thanks for the comments Matty, so you think leave it alone?, apart from a few nuts just starting to rust and the 2 reservoirs and red top the engine bay is pretty mint to be fair but I know what you're saying could look a little crappy if not done correctly

Unless of course you was going to restore it all repaint powder coat bits replate all the bolts replace all the seals gaskets and rubber item but this can get very expensive trust me I've been there and then your scared to use it also I don't believe it added a pound in value to my car.
Really is a cracking car and is only going to rise in value now and originality will separate yours from the rest try find another one owner totally standard car.

Whilst it has been SORN'd has it been started regularly etc? (Ignore this part if you already have.) Regardless, I'd be changing all the fluids, everything, even the diff and gearbox oil. The length of time it's been off the road, it's also overdue a cambelt change. Also make sure you get some fresh petrol in there.
Rubber hose perishes with age, if you were going to replace with silicone hoses, I'd personally stick with black ones to keep it looking OEM. Header tank and power steering reservoirs are the only other parts that look a bit "tired". They will probably clean up quite well though with a bit of elbow grease, or you could buy replacements second hand to refurb before fitting.
Again personally, I would refurb the inlet manifold. Phase 1.5 manifolds are all the same, regardless of UK Turbo/Wrx/Sti. You can pick up a bare manifold for a about £20/30. Refurb and replace. Whilst the manifold was off, it would it would give you a chance to properly inspect the inlet pipe to the turbo. They perish at the turbo inlet with age/heat.
Just my 20p worth. Oh, with it being stood for so long, check the fuel lines at the rear of the car, they enter/exit on the nearside and check the fuel filler pipe. The fuel filler has a plastic cover over it which collects dirt and water causing them to rot.

Stunning looking type R,all I would do is give it and really good service and use its a shame just to let it sit in a garage, don't bother with rusty nuts and bolts and red paint missing from the manifold its how it should be for its year, you start to change that and it will lose its patterner

Major service
Thanks for the comments
Micky, I have changed pads and discs and serviced the calipers also changed the oil and had it flushed, done the diff oil gearbox n engine, all filters, had the cam belt done along with all other belts, the tensioners as well. The water pump while he was at it, new plugs.Changed the fuel and flushed through with new fuel.
Plus had the radiator drained and all new coolants and fluids.
Used all genuine parts and only top quality oil (millers nano) cant remember what diff n gear box oil they used but know he would only use good
quality products for me.
Think he done a few more little bits but can't remember what he said.
The car did have small services while SORN and the fuel was kept fairly low n drained a couple of times, all pipes are still in great condition and is running lovely.
Due for a rolling road test soon to see how she is
