Default Engine build - which heads best for 2.1?

Hi all,

I am in the process of specing up my engine build, am going 2.1 on a cdb, and am looking at which heads to use.

Current options are, go for V5/6 sti heads, with new / different cams etc

Or: going for avcs/vvt heads, which I know will need wiring in as my wrx doesn't currently have these. I like the idea of being able to get more torque

Whatever route I go heads will be machined/ported etc, new valves etc

What I would like to know more about is;

- what wiring is required to add vvt heads onto my wrx, which ecu will I need (ideally looking at simtek)

- if I go v5/6 head route, what cams would you reccomend?

I have a target figure of around 500bhp, but maintaining driveability, minimal lag etc is as important as overall figures.

Thanks
Iain

Hi there AVCS on WRX is possible, but you will need JDM WRX engine with JDM WRX ECU,which is on ECU pinout for AVCS heads and JDM WRX have AVCS heads on inlet side.

I'm going for a build from scratch and will be using an aftermarket ecu, have been told that it is possible with autronics but not sure how much they are new, was wondering if they would work with a simtek?

I'm pretty sure Link G4 ECU have pinout for AVCS and Solaris/Syvecs have also pinout, you can have look here for G4 prices
http://www.thor-racing.co.uk/Link-103.asp
And about Autronics is about £1495 mapped and fitted
Simtek is useless ECU for AVCS controling.

ok thanks, so the autronics is only just more expensive than simtek so will be within my budget, syvecs I know is very good but also very expensive

Do you know what is involved with adding the extra wiring, is it fairly straightforward or a massive job?

Hi matey probably best option will be Link G4 ECU,you can have look here/download this pdf
http://www.linkecu.com/support/docum...on/SubaruV5to6
http://www.linkecu.com/support/docum...on/SubaruV7to9

You will need AVCS wiring loom and AVCS solenoid.

Not too big of a job, This is for a USDM to JDM but you get the idea, Relocate a few pins here and there and add another 4 wires and run back to the ECU

http://www.ds1motorsports.com/assets...l_document.pdf

I`ve been thinking about doing the same on a UK WRX with sti long motor, Still in the thinking process at the mo, Not sure if its worth it with Ecu etc....

Thanks for the info Jura.

Gaz I know what you mean, but for me the price of the ecu and heads is fairly similar whether I go for avcs or not, so the difference is in the amount of work/cost for the additional wiring.

Hi there i'm now building 2.1 stroker with AVCS,at this time i will run just with std.ECU,mine engine is JDM WRX which have built AVCS on inlet side and i will run just std.JDM WRX ECU,but i think i will need custom map for AVCS.

If you are will go for AVCS,you will need AVCS wiring loom/kit here is link http://www.iaperformance.com/product...oducts_id=2580
and AVCS solenoid which cost around £80
And additional wiring will be maybe nothing serious if you are go built engine from scratch.
You will see....Keep posted.

Hi there you will need custom tune from mapper here, but will be cheaper than EcuTek.
And for AVCS wiring kit and solenoid you can also ask some breaker for this kit,i pretty sure you will find this much easier.
