I had a rumour from one of the dealers that DRLs were due to be introduced in this country in the next year or so (EC regs or something similar 
). One theory was that the current side indicators on the new car were done so that they could easily be converted into DRLs - perhaps this has some truth in it?

Dont know if this is a wind-up but, try flicking the switch on the top of the steering column
