Question Dodgy Gauge????

I have an Omoni aux water temp gauge and in the past week or so it has started to display the warning light and the needle is constantly off the scale!!.The fans have also been kicking in and out even when just turning the ignition on at cold .This is also connected to a VFC (variable fan controller) which appears to work ok.I don't get any dash lights appear and the standard temp gauge on the dash reads normal.
I have tried disconnecting the aux gauge and this seems to have stopped the fans kicking in but don't know why the gauge is reading incorrectly.Would this point to a dodgy gauge or is there something else I need to look for, sender unit maybe?

your help is appreciated as its doing my head in

thanks
Micky

sounds as if you could have a short to the VFC check all wires for rubbing and earthing issues.
