For the price, you'll find it hard to beat Halfords super brilliance, 50% uprated.

Made to a VERY good standard by GE, they are on BOGOF.

My pleasure.

Just don't blame me when the CRAP OE Scoob lights are STILL scattering light everywhere.

So far, you've not solved your problem, only changed it a bit

I saw these yesterday in Chesterfield Halfords bogof.

Would I see a benefit fitting a pair of these? I drove back from Manchester over the tops last week and I didn't realise just how bad the classic headlights are. Are there any issue with dazzle? I read your comments in another thread re HID conversions - so that’s not an option, but I would like to do something. Are there any other alternatives?

Thank you

Mick

Sure, don't pay any attention to years of lighting experience.

The problem with the classic lights is that the reflector/lens unit design is poor. It doesn't focus the light properly so brighter bulbs just put MORE light everywhere.

Having said that, SOME of it goes where it should, so yes, you'll see an improvement.

The lads on here extolling the value of HID aftermarket kits are right, in a way. You WILL get more light where it should be, on dip, but you will also get a poorly focused mainbeam, and you WILL get more scatter.

Ask yourself this: HOW can a different "bulb" NOT made as accurately as a halogen, possibly cure the problems inherent in the classic headlights?

You're right: it can't.

Thanks Alcazar.

I fitted some cheapish blue/white H4 bulbs last year. When I took it for its MOT he failed them...said light was going everywhere. But, that’s why I take all my vehicles there, they are work tools and need to be right.

So if I did the HID upgrade I would have to take it elsewhere for MOT and it would be my luck anyway to get pulled by the plod...sorry sir that’s a £million fine and 40 points...do not pass go, go straight to jail.

I have been scouring tinternet for crystal lenses but they seem to be 97-00. Anybody know of any legal upgrade replacements that are an improvement for a 95 classic?

that sort of puts Alcazrs argument in the bin. halogen bulb failing mot and people with hids passing.

might be worth starting a post actualy asking people who have done the hids conversion rather than those that aint - as most would have already tried brighter bulbs at some point. how many have gone from halogen to hids and stayed with it and how many have gone from hids back to halogens

Not at all. You need to read, and understand ALL my posts. OE Scoob lights are crap. They scatter light everywhere and don't focus it properly where it's needed. POOR QUALITY halogen bulbs WILL cause more scatter for the same reason theat POOR QUALITY HID's will.

BUT: the brighter the bulb, the more scatter. It's simple maths.

Don't run away with the idea that no-one ever goes back to Halogen. It's certainly not true.

And don't confuse the reason that people don't go back. I've already agreed that HID WILL give better lighting.
But it's STILL Illegal to sell, fit or buy aftermarket kits, and they still WILL cause more scatter than a halogen bulb, simply because there's more light TO scatter

Don't even bother with standard lenses, they are crap. NONE of them are worth a sour f*rt

Get some Morettes, if you can. They use Cibie optics so are excellent.

NB: Morettes, NOT Angel Eyes

I think it may have been the quality of the H4's to be fair, like I said they were cheap. I think its more to do with the MOT tester doing their job properly...or not.

You know, I'm with Alcazar on this one, the HID conversions not legal for a reason. I reckon I've suffered the consequences of these being retro fitted to oncoming cars to often. There are already enough noob scoobs driving about with their font fogs on all day.

I reckon I'm going to nip and get a pair of Halfords own brand ones on bogof and see what they are like.

Morettes are a good upgrade but are still short of being good lights. Try upgrading the wiring to loose the 1.5V drop of the standard system. That will give 50% more light. It costs a lot less as well.

OK, I've got morrettes which are great but I'd like HID's.
What kit would I need for these?

(thanks to ryn004)

I recommend the 4300k as it is what I fit to my cars, but 6k is the most popular.

Will start giving it some boost in the coming months to test it out

H4 kit is bi-bulb which does dipped and main beam all in one unit.
