Cheap headlight upgrade...

Hi,
As with a bunch of people I was getting hacked off with the cruddy headlights on my Scoob (MY96 UK model - but they're all the same). I'd seen the threads about £50 bulbs etc and thought, hmm, I'd probably trip over the cat when I went to fit them and break them... So I decided to try the 100/80W bulbs from Halfords - about £7/10 each. If they caused problems I could use them on the Blade anyway which has no issues with wiring melting.
I fitted them and even though the lights were brighter it became more obvious that they actually illuminated thw wrong bits of the road. Car was in for a service yesterday so I asked them to check the headlight aim. (I had a Justy as courtesy car and it had MUCH better headlights on main than the Impreza!).
They said (Mill Lane) that they had *tweaked* them slightly but driving home the difference was obvious. I can now (alomost) see where I'm going! They are still not the brightest lights in thw world but much better.
So, moral is, get your headlights adjusted properly before spending a fortune on new bulbs. You may find you can at least live with them.

Another free tip for improving the lights..
Keep 'um clean!! You would be supprised at how much even a small amount of road grime can reduce the light output. They may still look bright from the front, but the sharpness of the beam is reduced and you can hardly see anything from inside the car.
I always keep an old cloth in the car and before any night time journey I always check the lights and give them a quick wipe if they look at all dirty. It really makes a difference, and at this time of year it's important to check and clean them often.

Well, they don't so much *wash* the headlights as make them wet . To be effective, you need to use them a lot while driving (when your windscreen is getting covered in muck, so are your lights, but it's easy to forget to hit the washer button when your doing the wipers, especially in the daylight). Once the dirt has dried it's impossible for the washers to actually clean them.

Headlamp protectors don't help one little bit either. I couldn't beleive how much they affect the light output when I fitted them. I leave mine on in the day now and stick them in the boot at night. Doing this also stops the **** you pick up during the day affecting night vision, so you have nice shiny lenses, when you need them.
