I had the fortune of spending 5 weeks in texas a couple of weeks ago. The car was thus stood in the garage for 5 weeks(bar being started once by the wife and not moved). The first time I drove it I experienced the same thing, petrol needle fine at first but after putting foot down for first time needle dropped off to bottom past the 'E'. This also happened occasional from startup and when booting it , going round corners. I wasn't happy but now 2 weeks on and 3 full tanks later the problem has dissappeared(touch wood). I have put it down to standing for a long time and some thing sticking(possible petrol tank area).
I know this is not much help, but has your car been standing for awhile.

If you remedy this, please post results and I may make further investigations.

Cheers Muddy
