I want to fit a vhf/uhf ham radio mobile transceiver in my 2 month old 5dr. I need to make a direct connection with the battery under the bonnet, and then get the wires into the passenger compartment in some way. I wonder if anyone has any ideas about the best route?

Hi Prof,

I'm licensed myself (old G3) but resisted fitting any gear into the car. However, the best route is through the rubber blanking plug behind the turbo. Route the wire straight up and secure it along the back. Make sure you have it fused at the battery or any short will make toast of your new car.

Enjoy the Scoobie and I hope the installation goes OK.

Ken

Prof,

When I had my car kit fitted I'm sure the installer found a rubber gromet (plug) into the engine bay behind the glovebox. Just pull up the carpet. Made it very easy to get to the battery from there.

Hope this helps

If you don't want to do it yourself, Car audio installers are pretty experienced at this sort of thing as they often run large cables back from the battery to provide a clean feed for the amps in the boot.

KenG, DaveW and Paul

Many thanks for yout hints and tips. I've been away this weekend to the excellent Lake District Summer Bash, so I took the opportunity also to ask there - and the rubber grommets seem to be the answer. Many thanks again.

Incidentally, I am fitting a Yaesu FT-90 (I think) - super small - the detachable front panel will fit on the front of the ash tray.

Now I have to think where to put the antenna!

For KenG's info, I too am a G3 - dates us both!

Many thanks again

DaveW - many thanks - must have seen you. That was my second 'do' - I went to the Settle meet before Xmas. I had a 97MY DBM 4 dr then, but chose a new 5dr to accommodate the dog.

Paul - the FT90 seems a bit too small really - on the bench it gets very hot, and the cooling fan makes a lot of noise. I'm planning on putting the main bit under my seat. It is York Radio Rally in a couple of weeks so will be looking for a new dual band antenna there - won't need an ATU hopefully!
