Having recently fitted some STi rear clusters I put a red bulb in one of the reverse light lenses. But I have a feeling that come MOT time it isnt going to bright enough Other than replacing the reverse light bulb and fitting a stand alone foglight (which I dont really want to do) what other options have I got???

Thanks in advance....

Lightbulb

I've just bought (but not yet fitted) some STi rear clusters as well.

Anybody got any more info on this. Maybe min wattage of the fog light?

Cheers

Question

How come the fog light is so bright if the wattage is the same as the other bulbs?

Or am I missing something obvious?

There must be some limit (min or max) on visibility at certain distance / power,

Question

O.K. then, how come the fog light looks so much brighter than the other bulbs on a normal UK car? Is it purely to do with the lense of the light cluster? If so how bright would it be in the reversing light part of the cluster? I was planning on using the red bulb in reversing light trick.

Thanks
Peter

I've used a red bulb in the reverse lense and it is no brighter than the brake light. I 'think' that a fog light lense has reflectors built into the unit to intensify the brightness???

Thought the fog being the same as the brake light is okay as long as it's brighter than the 5W side light.

***Confirmed by a friendly MOT tester***

Spoke to the tester at my local branch of a nationwide garage amd he said that as long as the fog light is 21w it should be fine. It should not be any brighter than the brake lights but obviously brighter than the side lights which are 5w.

I even asked about it being a red bulb in a clear cluster and he said it didnt make any difference
