Default Classic UK instruments to JDM STi?

Owning, as I do, a 98 UK car with the later white-faced instruments, I've always had a hankering to change them for the STi ones with larger central rev-counter.
I've found a set, and notice that the speedo, calibrated to 180, has had the k in kmh blacked out, so that it reads m/h.
The seller, however, does not know if any modification has been made so that it actually reads in mph, not km/h.
So....
Is there a way to tell, and can anyone remember what the mod was, or point me at a how to?
TIA.

the speedo mod for the later cars is generally an electrical convertor on the feed to the clocks - its not a Clock mod as such........

Just be careful the STI clocks are JDM and the plugs can be different.
