Default Shell octane rating

Do Shell garages over here sell 97 or 98ron ???? My regular Shell garage has it labelled as super unleaded but is this different than Shell V-Power ?
Or is it all the same?
I thought that Super unleaded was 97 and the V-Power is 98

All (legal)petrol in northern ireland comes from one of two sources, B.P or an importer whose name escapes me(not that you'd recognise it anyway). The supermarkets buy fuel from either source depending on who's doing the best rate for them. Shell, texaco etc all use exactly the same fuel from the same tanks in the docks. Only b.p import their own fuel & b.p ultimate is the highest octane fuel available here.

You can get E85 in Donegal, which is circa 105 RON. Bit of a trip for petrol for most though (not to mention you need a map specially for it and its probably about £2.50/litre!).

I dont think the stuff available via Maxol down south is E85. E85 would imply an 85% petrol content, and 15% ethanol based, which is what is available in the rest of the world, and the mainland in some areas.

From what I recall reading, the Maxol stuff only had a 5% ethanol content. So I guess it might be called E95 ??

97 RON works just fine anyway. May as well buy plenty of it, in case they decide it isnt worth selling here either !!!!

Interesting that they are starting to sell E85 too.....

Although do take note of the only cars they say are capable of running on E85 at present. That list is very very small.

It requires an ecu that can adjust mixtures to compensate for the alcohol content, as running E85 without adjustments, would leave it very lean.

It requires the fuel system, ie tank and lines etc, to be safe to use with the alcohol based content. Alcohol type fuels quite corrosive to alloy, rubber etc. ( Although not 100% sure on the corrosive content of E85, good chance most cars would be fine )

Id say thats why Maxol have started with the E5 first. Its such a small proportion, that it shouldnt cause any hassles.
