Strange engine noise?

Strange engine noise?
Car is a MY03 STI with PPP and in the last couple of weeks
it has developed a strange noise as the boost builds up around
2500-3000rpm. Sort of sound like a tappety noise, then dissappears above 3000rpm
(Have has the car for 3 years ,40k)
Is there anyone local who knows there way around subaru engines
who could have a look at it (without resorting to the dealers just yet)?
I live near Saintfield and work in Belfast Mon - Fri
