LOL this very problem had me beet for 2 years!!
there is a small lever on the boot catch , you must have moved it and not noticed.
open the boot with the Key..... check the catch and you will see said lever , move its position and hey presto you feel daft...
Chris.

I had a look but couldn't fix it. I could see a lever for the boot light on the left, the catch in the middle, and so what i assume is the boot release lever on the right - but when moved it springs back into its original position, which suggests it's ok? where should i look next?

Not done one, but I'd say not: it's probably caught at both ends, so releasing it there, then attaching it to the new one, and using the old to pull the new into place, just might work
Don't start taking it off until you've checked that it's NOT moving when you operate the interior lever, that neither end is just dislocated, and that the ends ARE fastened down securely
