Default Boost Gauge Pressure Advice Please..

Would Appreciate some advice please,Just had Boost Gauge fitted to My00 Scooby,by my local scooby dealer, its standard apart from K&n Filter,Ninja Backbox,And Baily Dump valve,..
The Mechanic who installed the Gauge told me,that i should not expect boost of 1 bar, because i have dump valve fitted,i have just taken it for a spin.maximum revs reached where 4.5k boost gauge indicated 0.5 wich i think equates to 7psi.
now im wondering if the mechanic was correct about the dump valve,or there is something wrong with my turbo?if anyone as any ideas.please let me know,im not very mechanicaly minded, but i would appreciate any ideas.
thanks RDB

Question

All Scoob turbos have dump valves. Do you mean that you have a VTA dump valve fitted?

I know that there is nothing to be gained from such a d/v, other than the louder noise, and some things to be lost.......they can cause problems AFAIK, but I'm not aware that they cause loss of boost?

My '98 turbo had a Defi boost gauge fitted just before it was LINK fitted and remapped. I made abouit 1 bar of boost before, and about 1.3-1.4 now.

Thanks,So at 0.5 Bar im not far of the optimum boost then? im not sure how the boost process works.for instance is 4.5k enough to get maximum boost?or does it creep up as revs increase?..and thanks for your advice

You will find that boost is dependent on revs and the gear you're in, so its not easy to give an answer. you will usually find peak boost in excess of about 4500 revs in 3rd 4th and 5th, but this is by no means the case in every scenario. I would doubt that you have a turbo problem, and would also doubt that a vta would be causing low boost pressure, but I'm sure some of the more technical guys will be along shortly.

maybe best to post in drivetrain, or ask a mod to move it?

you have to go out on the open road (motorway) you only realy get a true reading in 5th gear maybe sit at 65-70 floor it check your gadge and thats your true boost. i work in psi not bar. but do you or anyone else know how many psi is in a bar????

Besides all these things, ensure that the gauge installed has a good tight seal between it and the piping to the manifold, I remember one time after fiddling around with the gauge, I had reinstalled it without replacing the teflon sealing tape, and then spent an entire afternoon tearing down the intercooler, dump valve etc, looking for a 'manifold leak' because i was getting only 7psi, down from 10psi.
After all that, i changed the sealing tape on the gauge fitting and solved the problem.
