Question

Has anyone fitted or can recommend an oil temperature guage. Having had a Golf GTI I miss the whole computer wizzardery with the oil temperature reading and given how important the stuff is it would be nice to know what's going on.

How easy are they to fit and where do you mount them?

On another note, how useful are boost guages?

I'll be able to help you soon. I'm picking up an Autometer one this weekend from Scoobymania. Fitting will come later, as Mike T is trying to see if he can get a sump plug machined to accept the sender unit.

I'm also going for oil pressure (possibly just as useful) and boost pressure (looks pretty, lets you know what sort of boost levels your getting, useful if running modded or overboosting, or ...)

The three will be fitted in a custom gauge pod in the dash supplied by Scoobymania once they get them!

Will let you know once I do.

Oil temp goes in the sump...

The easiest place is hwere chiark said, in the sump plug, but I am not found of that (makes the sender tha lowest point)

I personally like having a threaded boss welded into the sump, onto the side.

Oil pressure is normally connected (T'ed) into the location of the original oil sensor (under the alternator).

If you are going to the trouble of welding a boss onto the sump, you might want to consider baffling it).

Guys
I`ve had a combined oil temp./press. gauge fitted for some time and I machined the sump plug myself to accept the sender . I can supply the drawing (AutoCad or picture) or even machine one for you if you get stuck!. Let me know.

Chiark,

I was contemplating the same set up you're going for from Scoobymania, so I too would be interested in you updating this thread with how you get on, plus how much it comes to if poss.

Cheers

Obviously I was only refering to the temperature sender re-the sump. The pressure fitting is, of course, taken from the oil press. light sender position under the alternator.

Question

JohnD,
Machining sump plug to take a temperature guage sender:can you make a new plug or do you need the existing one? Will it take any sender? - I am getting a Phantom guage.
Consider me stuck!!

Extremely useful. If your car is not providing enough boost then this will tell you and you can get it fixed and have more power. If your car is overboosting (providing more boost than it's supposed to) then this will tell you and you can get it fixed before the pistons melt!!!! (but the car will be faster for a while before blowing up!!)

Update as requested - the 3 gauges cost 137 quid all in from Scoobymania, which is cheaper than the UK distributors.

Scoobymania are also making a custom sump bung to take the Autometer sender, though this is quite a difficult operation as it's a tapered thread and they're being extra careful to get a good seal. Cost unknown, but I'm on the list for one.

If you haven't seen it, I've put together a fitting guide -

I machine the standard sump plug to take the sender, the most common adapter thread is 5/8" u.n.f. Check the thread diameter of your adapter and let me know?

JohnD, sender appears to be 1/8 NPTF with tapered thread.

Cheers BigDog, I've added them into the site, and also put a minor navigation change on there. The final summary page now shows all the different suppliers in one handy place, with contact details.
