PeteT -

Interesting theory, in fact I am in the habit of opening Coke cans in the car, need to feed my caffeine habit somehow !

Now, where did I leave that bleach....

p1 tud -

Got any details on where the flocking was done ?

Over the summer the top of my dashboard developed white patches which don't seem to clean off no matter what I try. There seems to be alot stuff stuck in the grain of the texture.

The only way to hide it is to use a high gloss dash cleaner, which I don't like.

I think it may be Autoglym dash cleaner that baked on it the sun, but then again it may not.

Has anyone else had this if so what can I use to get it looking fresh again.

Cool

Scott.T You need some help. Yes I can do you something to shift the old stuff but you'll need a nail brush. The stuff that I make will leave a nice matt finish....ask Peter Tasker

Mark -

Can you e-mail me with details of this : I've had one dashboard go completly barmy with this white "infection", in the end I had to buy a new dashboard and fit it. Now, the new dashboard is starting to do the same thing.

Nothing's been used on the new dashboar, although I am wondering if the cause is any of the odour devices I've been using. I used a nail brush with some tar remover on the old dasboard, and it went horribly scratched.

Yes, I can vouch for Mark U's dash & vinyl cleaner ("Swift"). I don't have the same scale of problem as you but I did have some white marks around the interior door handles and general grubbyness. Marks magic fluid(!) got rid of the marks and left the whole dash with a nice even matt finish. Got to be worth a try and definately cheaper than a new dashboard
Just a thought but you chaps with the white dashboards aren't in the habit of opening cans of coke etc whilst in the car are you? I once saw a Cavalier that had been left shut up for a few months and the whole dash area was a complete mould-fest, caused by the fine mist of sugary pop.

what about getting your dashboard flocked like the rally cars, my mate got his whole dash done for £120, much cheaper than a new dash and well trick looking.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this infestation. I think it must be a build up of grime. Some of the cleaning agents I have tried certianly start to shift it, but it's hard work and goes very tacky.

I too was thinking of getting a new/2nd hand dash from a breaker OR getting a trim repair specialist down to give it a fresh coat fo plastic grey paint.

Talking

I had this!! I spoke to Gossy who told me it was the alcohol in the cleaner I was using that had dried the plastic out

The soloution is to use a rubber/vinyl cleaner that doesn't use alcohol and that feeds the plastic

I'm sure Mark's products will do this but you can get stuff from ***fords. OK it may not be as good as Mark's but it will do the trick

Iain.

BoxerFlat4,

I was answering the general question!!
I've had a simalar problem and seem to have solved it!

What do Air fresheners contain? Could be alcohol to get the odour into the air as it evaporates

Thats why I suspected the air freshner - I suspect there are several reasons why this effect might happen, in my own case the chief suspect is the sugar stain.

Might just get the damn thing flocked....

I did you super glue to re-attatch a bit of carbon fibre trim. Maybe the vapour from that had something to do with it ?
