Default Admiral

Received my renewal through the post today from them - £952....

25 yrs, 8 NCB, no claims/convictions, insuring a blob wrx wagon.

After some Internet browsing I get some quotes around the £450 mark.

Time for a call me thinks.......

"No worries sir, we'll match that"....."£440".....!

Thank you very much, I'll take it.

Apart from the obvious (they want my money) why wasn't their renewal price competitive in the first instance?.....It's over double what they have reduced it to, not that I am complaining. Though to be fair the guy on the phone was more than helpful and understanding, and didn't really try and pressurise me in to buying extras.

So (eventually) a big thumbs up from me for Admiral

They count on you being lazy. The number of people who don't bother to shop around is vey high.

I was with Admiral for two years and every year they set my renewal to 'automatically renew' even though I told them not to. So finally I voted with my feet and went elsewhere (for a better deal).

No, they are just GREEDY!

Thumbs up for what? For giving you a false quote taking you for being lazy/stupid?

The conversation goes like this:
- Bend over Sir we have to fit this baseball bat in your anus.
- Err, sorry I will not accept this.
- Ok then we will fit a tennis racket.

I would just change as a matter of principle.

They probably knew £952 is a decent price for a 25 year old.

Writing 25 year olds for £440 is suicidal underwriting (IMO)

There was a post on here the other day when two 25/26 year olds were paying somewhere in the £200's for Impreza's... again through 'direct' insurers.

I have no idea how they are doing that.

Purely for the fact they were more than happy to assist matching the other quotes, and were friendly on the way doing so.....hence why I put 'eventually' in brackets! To be fair, every company I have ever been with has always asked for more in the renewal quotes, it just the norm to search around, but double the cost is a bit of a p155 take.

There were about 5 other companies that were willing to offer me insurance in the mid £400 mark. I may be young 'ish', however, I have no claims or convictions, have a standard UK family wagon, hold a steady sensible job and own my house which is in a respectable part of Dorset (post code for insurers is good). Surely these are all positive when coming to prove you are not another so called 'boy racer' at this age (which around my wider local area you don't see anyone above about 21 ragging around). So in what way is that suicidal underwriting?

A lot of my friends insurances are in the low £200s, though granted its not an impreza they own.

Your postcode certainly helps, but some of these rates from direct insurers are raising a few eyebrows in the industry

Might be getting marketing smart, take a hit on the cost of one or two policies and word gets round.

If I'm entirely honest I was expecting to pay a little bit more, but the fact it wasn't just one company offering competitive price must mean these insurers are desperately wanting the business or are trying to monopolise the market. Get your prices down to match Moley

There are two things:
- risk
- the profit you want to make on top
Without having access to the statistics/software that is used to come up with quotes it is hard to say but if other insurers are similarly priced to your final quote, one cannot help but assume the original quote was a joke.

It'd rather do it the way i have for the last 10 years, instead of doing it cheap for a year or two, loose money, and have to double everyones price

We make our money from commission, not from hoping our clients have a claim and making money on PI claims and hire car charges.

I know, was only joking

Just out of curiosity, with yourselves what's an average price of insurance for someone who's in a similar position to me (wagon or saloon), I appreciate that every quote is effected by various circumstances. I didn't think of looking at the specialists on here.

Well I was quoted £900 from moley on a 03 sti 8 years ncb and I was 27 at the time. Managed to find it cheaper. Not slagging here by the way before the moley brigade attack me.

Not the worst price though to be fair, as there are silly ones out there. Are you more competitive with modded cars and older drivers?

25+ we're normally very good on.... it's just the price you've have is exceptionally cheap.

We do prefer modified ones to standard ones (less claims on the modded ones)

Admiral are doing something right in the market. 22yo on a 52 plate WRX £650 this year with 2 drivers awareness courses declared, would have been closer to £500 without them. All I can say is Admiral are the most competitive in the whole marketplace. Fair play to them!
