Default New Driver Insurance.

Hello,

My 17 year old son has just passed his test.

We are looking to get him a car, he has saved up enough for his Insurance, well maybe, so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for both policies and suitable cars.

Looking at up to £1200 for the car.
He's nearly 6'4" so leg room may be an issue.

The area is quiet, low risk, he's going to be keeping it in a locked garage.

Hopefully some can share any experiences or advice

Thanks,.

Hi,

My mum and dad had the best idea when I was young and decided to take the hit and put me on my own policy from the start, (I bought car they paid insurance) while at the time this is a massive hit and seems like an awful lot of money in the long term its worked out a lot better.

Im now 22 and have 5 year no claims, this is the only way ive been able to insure myself on a 2007 STI at the cost of £1400. My parents paid £1500 on a Fiat seicento when I was 17 Third party, fire + Theft.

You may benefit now by putting your son as a named driver but if they are sensible (lucky) like I was long term you will save lots. I did a quote just out of interest at the time to see what it would be without 5 ncb and it was £3300 for the same poilcy!

As for car, I could fit in a seicento at 6,3 so anything super will be big enough really. Ive also owned a Ka great cheap first car and pretty reliable, just have to look for rusty sills and arches.

Hope this helps a bit,

Rob

Yes, thanks. I did suggest he takes the hit now and 'suffers' a small car to start on the no claims ladder.

As long as he doesn't get ideas on mine before he's 22.......edit 32

He's going to Uni after summer, but as you can imagine, he's champing at the bit to get driving.

how about a yaris? a lot of insurers are now doing this scheme where they fit a black box to your car and monitor your driving and adjust your premium accordingly
