Declaring non OEM items
Do you need to?
For example, brake discs and pads. If you put fast road pads and uprated discs on in place of oem pads and discs do you need to declare this?
Im aware that if you put different bushes on your ARBs such as whiteline you need to declare this so where do you draw the line? Are you bound to pay extortionate dealer prices in order to stay covered?

I am presently insured with Aviva for my Type R. I would say it it is quite modified. When detailing these on the phone to the (UK, british speaking) phone operator, was told up rating brakes improves safety of the car so no need to declare, it's the ones [upgrades] which make you faster which need to to be...

Its getting ridiculous. I bought a car the other week, 5 years old with a few things that needed putting right. I know that the dealer fitted non oem parts that were just as good.
Also, considering its age how on earth am I supposed to know whether the previous owner needed to replace any parts and whether they fitted oem parts or non oem parts?
For all I know the pads and discs may not even be oem at the moment or they may have fitted a silcone hose (whatever that it). How can you be expected to declare these things when I dont work for Mercedes, am not a mechanic and havent a clue what was part of the car from when it came out of the factory ...and how can my 50 year old single Mum neighbour who is totally clueless with cars be expected to know either if their local independent fits cheapo parts just to save a few quid? If there are shiny alloys saying Wolf on it then fair enough but its not reasonable to expect to know everything.

Just been to the gocompare website where they only give options to declare for "uprated" brakes. There is no mention of non oem parts.
I need to buy new discs and pads all round for my B200 Turbo where I have the choice of spending around £400 at Mercedes or buying standard Brembo pads and discs of ebay for £200. Now as these are an alternative and equal to oem quality that would pass MOT requirements and not regarded as "uprated" I wouldnt declare them as such.

Phew, I was beginning to get a bit panicked.
Next question I guess is, who says what is uprated or not. For example the Brembo discs and pads are from their standard range but they do a grooved version which are a little more. As the oem ones are plain do the Brembos need to be plain as well? Just wondering how 'uprated' is measured.

Is there some sort of regulation on this?
I have just taken out new insurance because my current insurer wanted a silly amount after part EXing my modded Impreza to a Merc B class Turbo despite everyone else charging almost half as much.
Only at the last minute when I saw another one did I realise I had a rear spoiler added. It is very subtle and a factory upgrade that the initial owner must have requested from the factory line. So my premium? £50! What on earth for? I very nearly declared it as unmodded as I thought it was part of the B200 Turbo sport kit. So that would have been £1100 I payed that in the event of an accident would have counted for nothing? What a con.
Not just that but many companies, including gocompare who I went with give you options for either a roof spoiler or a rear spoiler. Not quite sure what the difference is when talking about hatches but the roof spoiler made the car uninsurable (for some reason) where as the rear spoiler was £50, so I went with that option.

Just realised my father in law has a panoramic roof fitted to his car that was an option. He hasnt thought about saying anything about it, so where does that leave him? I would imagine that more than half the people down my road have factory options fitted that they havent thought about mentioning. A scary thought really.
