......I've got no specific advice but in my experience the insurance companies look at the car you have and if it's a cheap car then they assume you won't look after it and crash the thing !!

I can not get my head around insurance for young people. Last year when my daughter was 18 she insured her 1.1 206(first car) for Ł800 fully comp with an accelerator bonus...myself and her mum as named drivers.

A friend of hers(18year old guy) insured his 1.2 Corsa with his parents as named drivers and his policy is Ł2800 3rd party! Bonkers!

I had an Audi A4 2.6 auto which I sold to a 19 year old. He had a Micra which cost him Ł1,400 to insure. He reckons he got a quote for the Audi and it came in at Ł1,700 which is why bought it from me
I think the Micra was either a 1.0 or at most a 1.3. So for a car engine size that is at least twice the cc it seems ridiculous

When checking quotes for my brother we found that there is an upper limit on insurance for young driver. There was actually only a few cars that would lower the premium from Ł1600. Crazy.

Interesting reading but it's all doom and gloom isn't it? When my kids still lived at home I put them down as named drivers on a couple of cars I had and this did push the premium up by a bit. Ford KA and 205 td. But I was quite open with insurance company and told them when my daughter was going to have the KA for a week's holiday for example and even got them to include my son on the policy for "business use" when he had a part time job.

I take the comments about building up a no claims history with a big pinch of salt as the base premium is so much cheaper as they get older.

it has gone a bit extreme to say the least

the 2 apprenticies at my work, both 18 and been passed over a yr, are payin 2k on a 1.2 punto, does take the **** a bit and is really hard for young drivers to get cheap enough insurance these days

i passed nearly 10 yrs ago, had a 1.6 16v escort and cost me Ł800
