Insuring someone else's vehicle?
OK. Not a Scoob but I put this query here as it needs an insurance bod to check it over.
The situation is that I'm restoring a friends bike and it's getting to the stage that it can be put back on the road. It's been off the road since about 1991 so pre-dates all the SORN b*llux etc etc. And, as such, it also falls outside of the new 'continuous insurance' laws that have just come into force meaning that I could keep it in my garage indefinitely with no tax, no SORN notice and no insurance. To put it back on the road it obviously needs insurance, MOT and tax.
Insurance: I'm covered as I have a fully-comp policy for my Fireblade which also covers other bikes, third party, with the owners permission.
MOT: assuming it'll pass, I just need to pre-book an MOT and go there and back only and that's covered with no TAX.
Tax: this is where it gets more complicated. The insurance needed has to cover that specific bike i.e. an insurance document with that bikes registration number on it. My insurance can't be turned into a multi-bike policy with this bike as I don't own it. They can't even add a line under the 'any other bikes' that specifically names that bike. Also, looking at ... http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...icle/DG_069671 ... it specifically disallows this:
So that's out.
After several calls to my insurance bods 'they' say that I can take out a separate '3rd party only' policy on this bike for just shy of a hundred notes. Not the end of the world but my question is, regarding the insurance side of things, is this the only way to do it? Or is there something else that can be done?
Thanks in advance.
Dave
PS: yes, the bikes owner could insure it BUT the bike's in Cornwall and he's in Lancashire, and his wife hasn't come around to his way of thinking yet .... Oh, and as the last time he had insurance was around 1991 then it'd cost even more ....

The insurance policy for your vehicle may allow you to drive any other vehicle with the owner’s permission. However, your policy can’t be used as evidence of suitable insurance to tax any other vehicle.
