Track Day Insurance?
#1
I think most normal insurance does not cover track days (or driver development days). Does anyone know if there is such a thing as track day insurance and whom from?

Who are you insured with? Checking up on my Norwich Union policy it turns out I am insured for track days as it falls within the guidelines. As from September when I get my renewal I won't be, cos they've now changed the exclusions as of 1st Jan 2002 for all new policies and renewals!
Main thing is to check your exclusions, if it doesn't mention use on a track then get it clarified with your broker like I did.
Simple!

I am with Chris Knott. Only had the car a few weeks and have not received the paperwork yet. I know there are a few other (happy) people insured with them. Anyone know if they cover track days?
Mike.

I have a policy with Highway arranged through Greenlight - they'll cover track days for an extra premium, about £80 IIRC.
You could also try Eggar Lawson, they specialise in covering competition cars for road use, but they also do the opposite (ie. road cars for track days). Expensive, though.

dont be fooled, if your policy doesnt specifically exclude track days it doesnt automatically mean your covered.
I can guarantee your insurers will kick up and say sorry your not covered if you stack it on track - beleive me, mine doesnt say track days as an exclusion, but Im currently fighting to get my money as the insurers say I wasnt covered -

Was track use excluded in your policy? and who are you insured with?
Also why are they denying the claim?
Sorry for the questions, but I think we would all like to hear this as most of us don't get extra insurance cover!

If you do want to take out extra track cover, then Competition Car Insurance/Egger Lawson are the people. Talk to Nik or Georgina on 0115 941 5255 to take out cover.
Premiums start at about £55 per event, for £5k worth of cover (enough for most track day incidents, but not all). I think you can also get a season ticket for track cover as well.
If you intend to do lots of track events, then it's worth paying a bit extra to get a road policy which will cover you on track, than buying separate insurance every time.
However, if you do have an accident on track and claim off your road insurance, then it will affect your road premiums for many years to come.

Ok, briefly. My insurers refuse to pay out. I was on track and stacked it. So, I look at my policy and no where does it say track days (yes it says competitive events, hill climbs etc etc - but not track days) So I put my claim in.
Since my initial claim I have had a letter battle, the insurers coming out with any old crap all of which is untrue to get out of paying. Basically they say I m out the boundries of the policy and refuse to take the claim saying what I was doing was not suitable for the policy. Anyway, many months later Im at the point where the major underwriters are "investigating the case" - this has to be done before I can go to the ombudsmen - I tried already but they wrote back forcing me to allow the underwriters to investigate. So I have to wait for the result. This has been going on 4 months at least now, really sick of it, no real car to drive etc etc.
So the moral is, unless your policy states "Yes track days are covered" in black and f-ing white assume you are not!
Be warned all!

What insurance company are you with?
My broker has confirmed that I am insured until the end of September as long as they are notified about them and can prove that they are driver development days and not racing etc!

I'd rather not say as the case is still on going, sorry I have no idea who is reading all these threads. But they are a big concern.
Needless to say, the arrival of the post in the morning is the most exciting part of my da at the mo ;-)

Similar situation happened with a member from 200plus club.I don't know all the details so you could try posting on Yahoo! Groups :200plus.He got paid out eventually. The insurance companies like to use their terms of the contract to the letter but when you do the same back ie prove that nowhere on your policy does it say you cannot participate in track days, they don't like it.The key phrase the guy used was I think "driving for pleasure"and as trackdays are not timed that's all it was. Some companies are being much more specific in their wording now though,so check your policy.

Hey Rosco - I was with NU and they quite happily took 80 quid per time to cover the car on track.
I rolled it last november about 2 days after ADP IIRC (bad luck mate - did you get that ombudsmen ruling I found?) and its been sorted for ages. Full payout and a shiny 535 was sat on the drive three weeks later.
Personally, I wouldn't take anything less than a signed letter from the Ins Co confiming cover is in place.
It could be you......

Ombudsman ruling? hmm not sure though I have read every article on the site - including the motorbike one. - If you have something else though Id love to hear - a_d_powell@hotmail.com
My case is now with the policy underwriters - who tell me they are totally independant. I spoke to them the other day and apparantly they have 2 cases with my insurers at the moment, interesting. ANyway, they say that it had taken them along time to get the docs from the insurers - no surprises there then(I beleive they are playing for time as the service has been terrible). The person I spoke to said it would be 2 weeks, so hopefully soon I will have an answer - so that I can get on with my life again. It turns out I cant use the ombudsmen till this stage is done!
