Default Insurance for US citizen in UK

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any insurance companies in the UK that might specialise in insuring foreign nationals in the UK.

I have a friend from the US who is over here on a work permit, but obviously doesn't have a UK driving license.

We have rung round several of the big insurers and none of them will take into account his driving and insurance record in the US hence the quotes are all sky high.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try More Than? I believe my US friend got her insurance through them and they took into account her US driving record.

Thanks for the reply. I did try More Than and they point blank said they don't insure foreign nationals. Maybe I caught them on a bad day How recently did your friend get insurance with them?

In my (insurance) work i learnt that the DVLA authorities treat foreign licences as Provisional licences for one year ie someone yet to past their test but legally entitled to drive.

I saw foreigners insured and wasn't aware of any problem, although I can see it would be difficult for the insurers to confirm the driver's experience. Maybe they could try wrtiting to his former US insurers ?!

Try A-plan on 01635 874646 or CIS on 0161 837 8686 ( I think !).

Hope this helps bud !

She came here late last year. I have texted her to find out which company she used since I may be wrong. Will let you know.

Thanks for the replies.

I will try both A-Plan and CIS.

It may be of course that More Than have changed their policy recently regarding foreign drivers.

Thanks for the replies, sorted it with ASDA Insurance - they will take into account the US driving record so the quotes are much better.
