2 years ncd is lost after a fault claim, maximum ncd is 5 years.

if you have 6 years ncd then your insurer will have ncd as 5+ years, which means after a claim you will lose 2 years (back to 3 years)

basically speaking if you have 6 years, 7 years, 9 years whatever the insurers will take two years away from 5 years, regardless

hope this helps

Unless its protected NCB and then you dont lose out. I think u have to have 3 or more bumps in one year, of which are your fault, before protected NCB is affected.

Obviously u have to pay for the protection.

Not always. Protecting your NCB will usually cost an extra 10-15% on the basic premium (depending on the insurer). Bear in mind the 2 yrs you lose if it have a claim is only usually saving you an extra 10-15% anyway then it can work out to be a false ecomony.

Yeah basically.

The insurance companies will always protect themselves and get as much ££££ as they can!

Protected no claims is not as it may seem.

Lets say for talking sake your insurance costs 800 pounds and you have 50% no claims discount protected, you will pay £400 pounds cause your saving 50%

OK

You have a claim and the next year your insurance goes to £1200 pounds, you have a protected no claims discount you will still save 50% because the percentage of no claims is protected, so you will pay £600 pounds.

Having a protected no claims discount will not stop your insurance going up in the event of a claim -- all it will do is protect the percentage of your discount

Therefore it may not be as worthwhile as you think to protect your NCB

Yeah, that's exactly right. Having never made a claim i never thought to ask. I just thought it was the obvious. Make a claim, everythings cool, that's what you're paying for. Now i know different. I'll be getting two quotes this year, protected and not.
