I used to have 6 years no claims however after am argument with a post i made a claim last year, now i have had my renewal and this has been reduced to only 3 years, is this the norm to lose 3 years in one hit like this.
Thanks chaps!

2 years ncd is lost after a fault claim, maximum ncd is 5 years.
if you have 6 years ncd then your insurer will have ncd as 5+ years, which means after a claim you will lose 2 years (back to 3 years)
basically speaking if you have 6 years, 7 years, 9 years whatever the insurers will take two years away from 5 years, regardless
hope this helps

The insurance companies will always protect themselves and get as much ££££ as they can!

Protected no claims is not as it may seem.
Lets say for talking sake your insurance costs 800 pounds and you have 50% no claims discount protected, you will pay £400 pounds cause your saving 50%
OK
You have a claim and the next year your insurance goes to £1200 pounds, you have a protected no claims discount you will still save 50% because the percentage of no claims is protected, so you will pay £600 pounds.
Having a protected no claims discount will not stop your insurance going up in the event of a claim -- all it will do is protect the percentage of your discount
Therefore it may not be as worthwhile as you think to protect your NCB
