I have a Nova with a 2Ltr 16v engine insured by them.
Most of the other companies that i tried to get a quote from laughed down the phone at me...Not sure if that was because of the engine, or the car !

Quick question to hales...
When you listed the ones you tried as 'no thanks' do you mean you called them for a quote and they wouldn't, or you went by what it says on the Web pages ?
The only reason I mention it is that the Web pages frequently say stuff like no imports, no mods, no nothing... but if you call them you often get a quote. I'm surprised that Privilege weren't able to do it, they are insuring my import Forester STi with remap and exhaust.
Edited to say: when they see the Forester vs. Impreza STi PPP feature coming soon in Evo they might go off that idea....

I know how sad this sounds, but I need to ask:
Do insurance companies base their quotes on the specific mods you make, or do they just hear the word 'modified' and ramp the cost up no matter what you've had done?
My car's standard and I don't want to do anything radical (can't afford it more like - I'd go for 300bhp if only I had the cash), but I'd like to upgrade the dump valve. I don't want to double my premium for the sake of a bit less lag though.
Also, I know I must sound like a real tight wad, but will the dump valve have a bad effect on MPG? I commute a fair distance every day and I've got a heavy right foot!
Any advice gratefully received........

I think they hear the word 'modified' and statistically you automatically go into a higher risk category hence they bump the premium up - usually in a totally random manner.
re: the VTA dump valve, there's a whole can of worms there - most will say they have absolutely no performance benifit at all (on standard-ish cars, they are purely aesthetic/aural - if anything they hamper performance as the confuse the ECU - sensor detects loss of air (to atmos rather than re-circ'ing) and adds extra fuel to mixture, so in answer to your other question yes it will increase fuel consumption, might disrupt your idle as well. If you want to improve performance the best vfm would be a mechanical boost controller (£30 2nd hand?) accompanied by some appropriate guages (boost/AFR). Which I'll be selling soon.

Fife, ran the quote through twice to confirm. I'd expect it to be double for Birmingham.
(btw, there is only one set of football fans that can rightfully call themselves bluenoses!)

Ah of course - bit of a Rangers fan myself but spent too long down south so immediately thought of the Brum! Like you say, I don't think you'd get it for that price in Birmingham.

Thanks for the advice, Jamie. I have to say that I'm gutted though - I know it's shallow of me, but I was looking forward to the aural improvement.

Just got an email from Admiral saying they'd give me 40% off if I installed a black box in my car, monitoring whether or not I speed and drive at night, it brought the premium down to £500 on the nose. Not a chance in hell I'll be getting it mind you!!
